Windows Messenger

Hello All,

I have this slight niggle that I need advice with...

I can send files through Windows Messenger no problem at all, but when I click accept to receive a file from a contact it just freezes for 10-15 seconds and then informs me that it has failed.

I am using Win XP with Win Messenger 4.7. I aslo use Norton FW2003 and have checked the configuration of this program to see if it is the problem. In the choose programs part I have selected Permit All for each Messenger entry but this does not seem to have made any difference.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing this problem?

Yes I tried with the FW off for a brief spell. But going on the basis of attack attempts that I sometimes receive I wasn't encouraged to keep it off for long.

Getting caught with pants down isn't the nicest!!

Pardon the ignorance, but what do you mean by a proxy server?

I am using BT broadband currently

It's possible you are connecting thru a proxy server, this could have the effect you are describing I know it causes problems when downloading GAV updates.

Check in Tools > internet options > connections > settings and see if 'use a proxy server is checked'

As Prince has said see if the XP firewall is on?

To do that Go to Control Panel>Network and Internet Connections>Network Connections

Now Right Click Your connection Then select Properties and then the Advanced Tab

Now uncheck the Firewall Box (thats if it is not allready unchecked)

you could try posting in the microsoft newsroups, if the problem hasn't been found and solved there already.

XP messenger newsgroup

Found this

I am very new to windows messenger. Used it for the first time last night

The reply

It's possible that Windows XP has turned on your

firewall  (and therefore is blocking the

transfers).  You can either shut down the firewall (see  below), or just configure it.  Click

Start, then click the Control Panel. If you're in  category view click Network and Internet

connections then click Network Connections.  Right click  your connection, then click

Properties. For cable modem/broadband users, your connection will usually be called Local

Area Connection. For dialup, it should be the name of  your Internet Service Provider.  Click

the Advanced Tab, verify the Internet Connection Firewall  is turned on (or turn it off here,

and don't bother configuring it). Then click the Settings tab.  Click the add button and then

in the Service Settings, type in the following  information.  For Description enter MSN

Connection for Name or IP address enter 127.0.0.1, for

both External and Internal ports enter 1863. Verify TCP is selected and click OK.  Now you

need to  repeat the last step but changing the ports to 5060, 1503, 6891, 6892, 6893, 6894,

6895, 6896, 6897, 6898, 6899, 6900. Yes, 13 (including the first one) will now be selected.

Then click the 'Remote Desktop' entry (that was there before you started) and click Edit.

Enter 127.0.0.1 as the IP, and click OK (can't change anything else).  Make sure all 14 (the

13 you added + Remote Desktop) connections are selected  then click OK. For screenshots on

this procedure, see

If you're using any other firewall, you'll need to set it to 'Permit All'

or 'Allow All' to

make sure file transfers work.  As well, if you're going through any type of router, it will

need to support Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) or have some type of built-in Messenger

support (which it doesn't if it's not working).  If it does support UPnP, you'll also need to

use MSN Messenger 5:

(http://messenger.msn.com) as it supports UPnP file transfer.

Not sure I like the idea of 'Permit all'

Hello everyone,

Thanks for posting.

I have checked the XP firewall and the checkbox isn't ticked. I have tried to receive a file while Norton was off and had no luck. I am not using a router or anything either. Although both my friend are using routers.

Peter e, I have checked this link out and will investigate it further today, thanks

Still not getting anywhere on this matter!!!

It is beginning to get annoying. I have checked all firewall settings (both XP and Norton) and it still won't accept files from contacts. I was trying it out with a new contact recently. He sent a file because I wanted to show him the message that comes up when it fails. It worked!!!! twice!!!

So I thought it had fixed itself. I then tried it with my other contacts and it was the same as before.....failed!!! aaaarrrgggghhhh!!

I have checked the folder that should receive these files and it has the file details but all the files are 0kb in size! Can anyone help further? :( :(

Well I don't really have a technical solution for you but, if you recieved or sent files ok with a different friend......have you thought that the problem may not be your end but with the two friends you are trying to communicate with?? Perhaps they have their firewall set wrong or whatever?....Just a thought!

This is something I will need to check further with them. It is really frustrating though.

I downloaded MSN 5.0 and had 2 messenger systems running simultaneously just there. they were both fighting each other for supremacy. I thought they would intall ontop of each other. I have removed 5.0 now.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway.

I believe this is caused by the Messenger service and not you. I have had the same trouble in the past when trying to receive files etc. Seems worse at peak times.

Turn off Firewalls (Windows and Norton) and ask someone (who also has their firewalls OFF) to send you something. This will rule out the firewalls.
