Slow Internet

I've been having very slow internet surfing speeds lately, even slower than usual. My advertised ADSL speed (from Telus) is 1500 KB/s, but I am not getting near that. When I downloaded a file from my Gmail account at my school (yes, still at school :P ) I got 900 KB/s, but at my house I was only getting between 50 and 100. When I did an internet speed test, I kept on getting 370/360 for download speeds, while it showed my upload speeds to be 500 - 520 KB/s. I use mainly use Firefox, except IE for Windows Update and such. I regularily run CCleaner, Ad-Aware 1.05 SE, NAV 2004, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware. I am behind a D-Link DI-624 wireless router, although connected through an ethernet cable.

I am living in British Columbia, Canada.

My PC specs are:

3.20 GHz P4 w/ HT

1 GB 2 DIMM RAM

Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller

Another person I know who doesn't live far from me and who also has Telus is getting 1.1 MB/s

Well, there is a little strange activity going on. Sometimes my internet just stops working completely for about 10 seconds at a time. I'm not even able to access Windows Forum. For the firewall question, I am not using one. I am just using the router that I mentioned in my first post. Would it be helpful if I was running a firewall, because I have Zonealarm Pro on a different computer... I was trying to find some information about my problem via Google, and found something that said you have to be close to Telus to get the fast connections. I'm not sure where I found it tho...

I don't know about how things work in the UK very well, but DSL here usually comes with a guaranteed minimum bandwidth. If the ISP sells you a certain bandwidth and doesn't deliver, they should be responsible for getting things working, provided you can prove that the problem isn't on your PC.

A firewall like Zone Alarm would tell you exactly what applications are trying to access the Internet and could help identify a rogue program, if you suspect one. Pay close attention to what programs request access immediately after you install it.

I would use Zone Alarm free edition personally.
