What flavour of Linux

Well we got a new forum section just for Linux, so lets talk about it.

Used to use RedHat 5.1 a few years back, Knoppix last year and then Mandrake 10.0. (Which I currently have, dual-booting with XP Pro).

Also have Fedora sitting in a drawer waiting to be installed on another machine, when I get a round tuit.

So what distro(s) do you run, and why?

Currently:

Laptop - Ubuntu Hoary Preview - Why? Because it "just works". Had to use ndiswrapper for the wnic but apart from that, perfect for the machine!

Desktop - Currently the same for the same reasons, but soon to be Gentoo 2005.0 :D

Edit:

First used Redhat 6.1

Then SuSE 8.0

Then Redhat 8.0, then 9.0

Then slackware 9.1

Then a whole bunch of others :D

Well, I previously ran Mandrake 10.0 then 10.1, but have since went to Slackware 10, and I wouldn't look back :D

I have tried all sorts of distros but found SuSe the easist for me, so I brought 9.2 pro.

At the moment I also have Mepis & Ubuntu to try out.

Thats the beauty of free software you just try them out and if you like them you can then buy them if you want to.

At the begining it was Red Hat 6.0..I think I still have the install cd's somewhere around my house... Managed to crush it every two weeks real bad... Long break then ... About 2 or 3 years ago I ran into Red Hat again and then some Solaris and the allmighty Suse 8.0.. Great distro.. Then 8.2 and then I began to play with python and QT (and libsip) and Suse dissapeard ..

Slackware (9.0->current) came along and never put another Linux on my box ... I played with Suse 9.0 and Mandrake, but they are not so easy for me...

Oh..Not to forget FreeBSD :D ... Really really fast OS ... I'm going to put it again instead of Win XP when I catch some time :D...

Questions anyone ? :D

Currently running debian testing, have tried suse 6, 7.0, 7.1 ,7.2, 8.0, knoppix hd install and have mandrake 10 on a laptop but don't access it very often. Never really got into Linux till I started using Debian, although Suse was very user friendly the rpm path is a right pain compared to the apt-get system of debian

Have alway run KDE, seen gnome but never liked it, tried icewm on an older PC but that was horrible.

Using Firefox for browsing, Kmail for e-mail, Knode for news, openoffice for office (been using OO v2 on windows, very nice), quanta for html, kbear for ftp (looking for a better replacement) and gimp to name a few

Have always used Mandrake now using Mandrake 10.0

I use Win XP Pro dual booted with Suse 9.2--not especially happy with it as it doesn't see Windows partitions without some extra bother/trouble. Bit of a noob....

Love Knoppix for trouble shooting Windows machines because it finds most PCI NIC cards making it easy to get on the internet and auto mounts Windows partitions, making it easy to get crashed Windows files and burn then with k3b. Good stuff. :)

I've used a few versions of RedHat, but didn't like the prices they were charging for auto-updates and support. Someone here, Redhat maybe?, suggested Ubuntu. I've used the two latest distro's of Ubuntu, and I like it a lot. It installs very easily and seems to work on everything from laptops to servers.

For secure builds (I'm just learning about it), I like OpenBSD. It's pretty awsome security wise, but it isn't an intuitive install for me.

I've used a billion distros. I started using Linux before distros were created, back when you got the tarballs of the kernel (.0XX series) and made your system by hand.

Since then Linux has come a long way. I now have Slackware, Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora Core (can I say yuck here without causing a flamewar?), Mandy, and I believe I still have a Sorcerer Linux distro around the house. Two of my house servers are running BSD variants, one Free, and one Net. I've got a couple old Sun Sparc20 boxes sitting on a shelf that are running either SunOS or Solaris, depending on the box. I will openly state that I don't like what Sun is doing for an operating system.

I even have a box running the dreaded, gosh they're evil, SCO Unix.

Couple of my little toy boxes are running Atheos and BeOS. I find BeOS to be a grand operating system.

Sadly I can't get my wife to adopt the Nixes. I've managed to coerce my elder stepson into using Ubuntu but only because he likes to change Gnome themes. I'm still working on getting him to even try WindowMaker.

for eyecandy elive is a nice istallable live cd with enlightment

for easy to use installable live cds

i like kanotix,pclinuxos. for easy to use and everything you need to configure is in the control panel

i use removable harddrive tray so there is need to mess with the mbr

Yuck to Fedora, I have just gone over to Fedora core 4 and it is one of the easiest to configure I have come across.

Everything just works, no command line to use.

The only thing I had to configure is the Nvidia graphics driver.

After using Mandy & Suse 9.2 (and moving to 9.3 which is awful ) i tried Mepis and Debian 3.1 sarge and Ubuntu then Fedora, I prefer the kde interface but i an slowly getting used to gnome, and i also like fluebox.

im using Unbuntu 5.10 and lovin it i have about 10 michines i found in the trash or they was not working and givin to me and at flee markets that i refurbished there all duel boot windows XP pro and eather Unbuntu or Knoppix or all 3

hiya trackrat thanks for the welcome as for the 10 michines yeah there all neted and like i said i refurbished em all was gonna sell em but once i put life back in to em i could not part with em lol

so now i just run them i like testin out different distros both install and live CDs so i run all different stuff on them its fun and if i trash one i still got afew backups :)
