Unexpected reboots and application errors

Recommended Posts

I have a Windows XP system that is experiencing unexpected and increasingly more frequent reboots and application errors. The reboots occur randomly and do not seem to coincide with heavy processing. My OS (XP SP 1) is set to restart rather than blue screen because if I have to turn the machine off at the power supply, I can not turn the machine back on. However, once it has been turned off, I can get it back on after a couple of days. I did set it to blue screen once, and got the following error: stop at 0x0000008E, ati2dvag.dll. In addition, I have recently begun to receive frequent application errors from apps such as my web browser (IE 6 and Firefox) and even spider solitaire. Since receiving the first error, I have replaced the memory and the power supply, so they are not the culprits. I am replacing my motherboard today.

Here are my system specs:

Epox EP-8K7A motherboard

AMD 1700 ATHLON XP processor

2x512 MB Kingston non-ECC memory (upgraded from 1 generic 128 MB and 1 Micron 256 MB non-ECC memory

ATI 7000 32MB DDR video card

ATX 420w power supply (upgraded from 2 different 300w power supplies)

Any ideas on what this could be? Thanks in advance for any responses.
