If anyone is wondering about how they go about obtaining the £200 Council tax rebate, promised by grinning Brown, wonder no more. I telephoned the local council this morning, and they tell me that it will be paid together with the winter fuel allowance by the Department for Works and pensions.

That will cause some confusion :D

Why? It's straight forward, if you are over 65 you will automatically be paid the £200 by the Works and Pensions department. You don't need to take any action yourself.

Pensioners should not have to pay any taxes. We all did our share and paid our dues (in fact we had no choice) when we were earning. Also Gordon - may there be peace on his soul - soon, raided the pension funds a couple of years ago.

He removed tax relief on the earnings of pension funds, the nett effect of which was to reduce their value by about 10%. He also removed the age related tax relief for couples, except for those who already had it, or would reach 65 years old before a further twelve months lapsed. This means in my own case that I pay several pounds a week more tax, than does my friend over the road, who happens to be eighteen months older than me. He has been a very clever man with his stealth taxes, and it amazes me that people have been gullible enough to be taken in by him. It is a sorry fact that the difference between the wealthy and the poor has grown faster in the last few years than ever before.
