kismetk
HelloOn my (old!) Windows ME system, when I download a file, or add a new Favourite in IE, these seem to be being assigned one of various incorrect icons for the file type or no visible icon at all. Can someone help me with this please?
nellie2
Could you be a bit more specific? When talking about an icon for a favourite that you have added, do you mean a favicon? Which is the little picture next to the link. What sort of downloads are you talking about exe's? Any chance of a screen shot to give us more of an idea of the problem :)
kismetk
Yes, some favicons, and it would seem to be .exe files. A screenshot of the folder into which McAfee superdat .exes are downloaded is attached.screenshot.doc
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Don't know how this happened, but I'd suggest to download and install TweakUI 1.33, then run Repair Icons.
kismetk
I read somewhere about deleting ShellIconCache then restarting. Is this a possible option here? I am having some trouble with installing Tweak UI, when I doubleclick the .exe it asks to unzip to C/WINDOWS/TEMP - is this correct and what do I do after this? Thanks. expertec
In C:\Windows\Temp you should find a file called tweakui.cplDouble click this to install it, the it appears as an icon in control panel. :)
kismetk
I did this, and got the message that tweakui.cnt was not found. Do I need to browse to C:\Windows\Temp to pick this up? Thanks and sorry for being dumb.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
From the TweakUI Installation instructionsCreate a folder by right-clicking on the desktop, click New, and then click Folder. Type a name for the folder. (Of course you can use your TEMP folder instead of the Desktop.)Click the Download Now button at the top or bottom of this page. In the File download dialog box that appears on your screen, click Save Program to Disk.In the Save As dialog box, choose to save the file in the folder you just created, then click Save.Open the folder and double-click the downloaded file. This may create several new files in your folder. Among these, look for "Read Me" or "INF" files. The "Read Me" file will contain any additional download information you need to know. To install the file, right click the .INF file and click Install.
kismetk
It installed correctly this time, and I have repaired the icons. Thanks very much for help given. I am always nervous about trying to fix things on my systems as they are both so much needed. You forum people are so patient and helpful and give me the confidence to go for it.
