deuces wild
Taking off on the USB 1.1 vs USB 2.0 discussion in another room, is there any significant (noticable) difference when connecting various hardware to either? If so, does the hardware have to be USB 2.0 comliant to take advantage of this?If this is not the correct room to post this in please feel free to move it.Thanks. djohn
Yes, hardware needs to be USB2 compliant to take advantage of the USB2 connections extra speed, but not to work with it. If using USB1.1 hardware through a USB2 connection it will transfer data at the lower speed, if using USB2 hardware through a USB1.1 connection, you will most likely see a message informing you that your not achieving the full potential of the hardware but it will still work fine at 1.1.Uploading of info such as from cameras, or exchanging data from an internal drive to an external USB drive will be quicker, but scanners and printers will not see much improvement, if any. The final speed of these latter two will be restricted by their own engine speeds.
deuces wild
The improved speed....is it a matter of milliseconds or even a couple of seconds? Is the upgrade to a USB 2.0 card really worth it?
-pops-
For many things, upgrading to USB 2 wouldn't be worthwhile but if you have large amounts of data to handle, say an external hard drive or an optical drive, the data transfer rate is much, and noticably, improved by having the faster type. With DVD transfer, USB 2 is essential to transfer data at an acceptable rate. You do notice faster transfer speeds from cameras and such like but the second or so improvement hardly justifies installing USB 2 and the intrinsic slow speed of things like scanners and printers, like Djohn says, prevents any speed increase at all, despite what is claimed to the contrary.Having said that, USB 2 PCI cards are low cost and easy to fit into an XP machine - they self install so, if you feel you need one, get one :)
deuces wild
Thanks guys. Looks like I would not benefit from the upgrade so why throw money away.
Scarecrow Man
There are different speeds.USB 1.1 uses two speeds: LowSpeed (1.5 Mbps, approx. 192 Kilobyte/sec) and FullSpeed (12 Mbps, approx. 1.5 Megabyte/sec)USB 2.0 uses HiSpeed (480 Mbps, approx. 61 Megabyte/sec)
