Tony Posted April 18, 2005 Report Share Posted April 18, 2005 Hi AllI formatted my C: Partition and re-installed XP Home Slip Streamed with SP2 over the weekend, now it is fully upto date with all updates, Avast, Zone Alarm are running and both upto date.Now when i put my Office 2000 disk in , i get a message in a "Windows Installer" box saying that"The System cannot Read From The Specified Decice"with Cancel, Retry & Close buttons on itRetry gives the same error.I have also tried my wifes Office XP Cd and i get the same result.I think that it is a Windows Installer problem but what and how to fix it i don't know.I even formatted and re-installed again, then tried installing Office before i went off to the Win Update Site, just incase there is a problem with a Win Installer update or something, but i get the same result.Other software installs ok from CD.So can any body help Please as i can not open any of my office docs.Cheers allTony Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

andsome Posted April 18, 2005 Report Share Posted April 18, 2005 When I first had the new computer with XP SP1, I installed Office 2000 with no problem. I have since installed SP2. Tony Posted April 18, 2005 Author Report Share Posted April 18, 2005 Hi all OK i got office 2000 installed now. What i did was, gave it a go at copying the setup files to a folder on the HD, but in safe mode (as i got the same errors when trying it in normal mode), and it copied ok, then booted back into normal mode and installed it from the folder on the HD. AFAIK this tells me that the drive and the CD are ok, so it must be something to do with the way Windows Installer is reading the disk All other CD's have installed fine so far but i had the same trouble with CD2 from office 2000 (Publisher CD) so i did the same thing in safe mode and it works.But there is a problem some where, which i would like to get sorted. If you are using the recently released version 3.1 - can you uninstall it and try again?(To check the Windows Installer version, right-click on C:\Windows\System32\msi.dll or C:\Windows\System32\msiexec.exe and select Properties) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was expecting to see it in the Windows Updates list on Add/Remove Programs, but it's not there (KB893803).But you can uninstall it from Windows Explorer; run spuninst.exe from folder C:\WINDOWS\$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803$\spuninstTo reinstall it (after reboot and Off2K install attempt), use WindowsUpdate, or download it from KB893803. Tony Posted April 19, 2005 Author Report Share Posted April 19, 2005 HiWell it seems to be ok now, i did this1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt. 2. Type msiexec /unregister and press Enter. 3. Type msiexec /regserver and press Enter.
