PC hangs just before WinXP logo screen

Recommended Posts

hi,

i have been having problems with my system on start-up. The problem ONLY OCCURS AFTER

A LONG SHUT DOWN i.e.NOT on a restart or even if i shut-down for a short period of

time. Its usually when i leave my system off over night and come to turn it on the

following day. The problem occurs just before the WinXP screen appears (not the logon

screen the one previous to that). Everything is going fine, and then it just hangs.

I have to restart a couple of times to get it to boot up successfully. It cannot

be a Windows problem, as i did a clean reformat yesterday, and yet the problem still

occurs.

Its as though the hard drive isnt being recognised - its weird. Once i get into windows

i have no problems at all. Everything works great.

Ive noticed that when i come to start-up the PC the USB light on my modem usually

flashes during boot up (on a successful boot up that is), and the PC speaker gives

one short beep. I can now recognise when the system will hang, as the USB light does

not flash at all on start-up, and there is no system beep either- not sure why this

is?!?!

i.e. if the USB light flashes and the pc beeps - boot up will be successful.

if the USB light does not flash and there is no beep - the system will hang.

Does this sound like a hardware problem???

Does anyone have any ideas ?

regards Jp

This sounds as though your motherboard is on its way out. The reason I say this is because of the intermittent POST testing (the single *beep* is called a POST code and indicates everything is fine) and USB light...

There could also be a conflict between devices on your system, or your BIOS could have an improper setup.

Enter the BIOS, and confirm the drives are properly configured, and not set to "AUTO" (or auto-detect, ect).

I had the same problem. Windows would take about 10 restarts to boot, but once it did it was fine. My problem was, the video card was no plugged in all the way. On most newer AGP (4X, 8X) they require you to almost break them to get them in properly. Some have a small clip that will latch on to one side on the card to hold it in place. I would also check all PCI cards, RAM and unplug and replug your hard drive and CD-ROM IDE cables.

Agree with the above, also if you have more than one stick of memory, remove and just boot from one stick, if it works fine this way, remove that stick and try another until you find the one causing the problem.

If its not memory related then look to the power supply, booting is where everything is drawing on the power unit and if there is a fault with the supply then this is the most likely time for it to show itself.
