TeraTerm

I'm not sure how much this will interest the general forum population, but some of the moderators and people who work on PC's and Routers may like it.

If you have to do a terminal session to a router or a CSU/DSU, or any network device, you might try TeraTerm. It has a simple, clean interface that at makes it easy to configure and use, it works with a lot of network devices (not finicky like Windows HyperTerm), and best of all, it's FREE!

You can download the latest version (as of this writing, 3.1.3) at this link:

http://www.ayera.com/teraterm/download.htm

After downloading, just unzip it, and double click the executable! No installation, per se.

It does TCP/IP connections (Telnet, SSH (secure), or a port you specify), or serial connections. When using serial connections, use make sure you set the speed, parity, etc. to work with the device you're connecting to. 9600 baud, 8 Data Bits, no Parity, 1 Stop Bit, and no Flow Control works with many devices.

I strongly recommend using SSH for devices that support it. Cisco routers will support SSH if you have a code version that allows you to set the required type of encryption. PIX firewalls support SSH.

Telnet sends traffic clear text meaning it could be intercepted as it goes across the network or the Internet. SSH is encrypted.

I'll post some screen shots tomorrow.

Enjoy!

If you are only interested in serial connections, you might want to try FoxTerm from http://www.foxterm.net/ - it allows you to configure an XML file and quickly open multiple connections within the same session. I find it really useful for quickly checking on equipment or starting/stopping logs for multiple serial connections. It's free but doesn't support SSH or scripting.
