nellie2 Posted April 25, 2005 Report Share Posted April 25, 2005 About NHTCUThe National Hi-Tech Crime Unit, part of the National Crime Squad, was created in April 2001.The NHTCU works to combat national and transnational serious and organised hi-tech crime both within, or which impacts upon, the UK.A multi-agency unit, it has staff seconded from the National Crime Squad (NCS), the National Criminal Intelligence Service (NCIS ), Her Majesty's Customs and Excise Law Enforcement Investigation (HMC&E), the Intelligence Agencies and the MilitaryThe work of the Unit is broadly divided into six key disciplines: Tactical and Technical Support, Intelligence, Operations, Digital Evidence Recovery, Crime Reduction, and Industry Liaison.Crimes targeted include fraud, denial of service attacks, blackmail and extortion, on-line child abuse, hacking and virus attacks, software piracy and Class A drug traffickingIt is also a focal point for domestic law enforcement, providing strategic assessments, operational and tactical support, business intelligence and best practice advice and fulfils the requirement of the G8 Action Plan for a Single Point of Contact for Hi-Tech Crime as agreed by nations in Washington in 1997.The NHTCU has conducted over 70 investigations and arrested more than 170 people since it began operations in October 2001.Specific investigations have targeted the people behind phishing scams - the spoofing of websites purporting to be financial institutions and auction sites looking to dupe the user into imparting their account details. It is obvious that it does not work as it should, because we are currently under attack by the biggest bunch of con. artist, swindlers, cheats and liars that this country has ever seen.So much for the "G8 Action Plan for a Single Point of Contact for Hi-Tech Crime".
