Desktop Icons & Labels

I use Windows XP Home on my PC.

Just noticed what appears to be strange behaviour with the desktop icons.

My icons are set to "Align to Grid" and have white lettered labels on a transparent background.

If I right click on the desktop, select "Arrange Icons By" and click on "Lock Web Items on Desktop" after a pause of about 20 seconds all the icons disappear momentarily then reappear but with their labels now with white lettering inside a blue background. If I right click again and untick the "Lock etc" the icons again go AWOL and return with the normal transparent background.

I don't understand this behaviour - niether do I really understand what the "Lock Web Items on Desktop" is all about - I can detect no change other that the change in label background colour.

Can anyone throw any light on this?

Basically, the web items are things on the internet, such as a web page, and can be viewed on your desktop. Locking them, simply means locking it so it cannot be changed.

The reason your icons are behaving strange is probably because the web content will sometimes make the icons difficult to see, therefore, when locked, you get a background so nothing over laps them. Unlocked, you are free to move your web content to see what the label says.

Iconoid is another way to hide or show backgrounds for icons (Windows - All Versions)
