I tested it by rebooting. BUT something shocking happened. The next day, when I started Windows, this panel pops up again...and the bottom right-hand corner of my desktop shows...the QuickTime icon. It is no longer on the Programs section of the Start Menu though, so I have no idea if I can still run it somehow.I tried right-clicking on the QuickTime icon, and only 4 items are available to me: QuickTime website, Open Favorites, Open Recent and Exit. I've used the RegScrubXP - and was shocked to find so much junk from programs I've long deleted and no longer use. But the problem still remains. Did you install any applications or hardware (USB device) around the time when it started?Can you check your Device Manager if you have any devices with a yellow exclamation mark on it? StMichael Posted May 6, 2005 Author Report Share Posted May 6, 2005 I can't really remembered what I did, but before I created my Login on my wife's computer (which I am currently using after my laptop gave up the ghost, so to speak), she did not have this problem.I did not install any other USB ports, but I do have 2 "permanently" connected USB devices - one of them a Logitech webcam, the other a USB hard drive. You mean they could be the problem? The latest device I put in was the Logitech webcam.The devices with the yellow exclamation marks - hmm...you mean these really could be related? I'll do a reboot and report on the "problem" later (I'm busy typing a report for my principal now). This is really more of a nuisance than a problem, since the computer appears not to be adversely affected by this SiSPORT and Lavalys Kernel thing. Can't really tell though - in the first place, does anybody have any idea what these two things do?Interestingly, I've checked Device Manager (to disable, as suggested) and realised that it is no longer showing the SM device. Sigh...why are there so much problems with computers? Aren't they meant to be productivity devices? I've spent so much time solving computer problems, both personal and company (I'm the man with one eye, in the land of the blind, if you get what I mean). If so, you should see exactly what devices you have, and what drivers you need. Did you get any 3rd party CD-ROMs with that computer.It would really be best if you had the right drivers for all your hardware devices; it's kind of stupid to have hardware just to disable it.Sigh...why are there so much problems with computers? The biggest computer problem I ever had (apart from an IBM/370 catching fire) was caused by Norton software.But if it works well for you then that is just fine. I think it is more appropriate, since ControlService no longer appears. Don't ask me what happened. I used to work with radars and things like this used to baffle me - the client would report a problem, and halfway while working on it the problem would disappear and the system would work perfectly...until the ship is out at sea again!
