Windows freeses upon loading?

I went round my friends house the other day, and removed thier speakers from the computer to put on an mp3 player while the computer was still on.

Suprisingly it froze when i took the speakers out, and now whenever it gets into windows it freezes on loading windows (the tankbar shown, but none of the icons show)

I can move the mouse but cant click on anything.

His oppperating system is windows ME (which is the worst)

Can anyone help?

It always used to be the advice to shut a computer own before making any alterations to the wiring or connections. With the arrival of USB and firewire where is it acceptable to hotplug items, this advice seems now to be neglected and anything and everything is plugged in and out willy nilly - sometimes with unfortunate results.

I have known it happen where just plugging/unplugging a PS2 mouse with the machine live has completely wrecked a computer motherboard.

I'm not saying specifically that this has happened in your case but there is a distinct possibility. Even the most simple speaker setups present an inductive load and can whack a punch of power back down the line when disconnected. These sorts of power disturbances can soon affect the extremely sensitive semiconductors on a computer motherboard and even if they ae not destroyed, can be severely affected.

It may not be the case with you but, from my view, things aren't looking good.

The number of times I've unplugged and plugged in my speakers when I installed my 5 speaker system with the comp running :blush:

I was going to say, you may have bumped the computer a bit too hard, and the hard drive crashed. But it wouldn't load anything if that was the case. :huh:

Can you boot into safe mode and post a HijackThis log?
