andsome
Someone more qualified than me will probably help you. All that I can offer is the fact that Microsoft DO NOT send unsolicited e-mails. For updates in XP you will see the little gold shield in the corner of the screen and a balloon message.
Scarecrow Man
Andsome is correct, Microsoft will NEVER send an e-mail with a link to an update. They will make the update baloon appear in your taskbar. Your son in law has possibly downloaded a virus. Can you boot into safe mode? or do system restore? Redhat
If any of you have experience with burning "images" (ISO files) then you can scan from the "Public Antivirus CD" made by someone on another forum, it uses the free McAfee scan engine and I have used it when i'm "out and about" working on machines. http://nyquil-kid.dyndns.org/As SM says, can you get into safe mode? It would make things alot easier!
