Do both of your partitions show up in disk management?

um, how do i get to disk managment?

Did you just delete the 2nd partition? You also need to resize the 1st partition.
yep, i did resize my windows xp partition. maybe i should have mentioned, i unpartitioned it using a mandrake 9.0 cd. incase that matters.

Do you have "Administrative Tools" in your start menu? If you do then inside that folder there should be "Computer Management". Once you get in there on the left there is an option called "Disk Management". Click it and it will give you hard drive / partition info. If Administrative Tools is not in your start menu, there is another way to get there. I believe that this way is grossly inefficent, but it works. Right click your start menu. Click "Open All Users". Double click "Programs" and then "Administrative Tools". Just open Computer Management from there.

...or i could just go to "control pannel" and gone "admin tools" from there. alternatively, i could have just right clicked the "my computer" (or "home" on my puter) icon, and selected "manage" :P oh well.

what i had was

windowsxp | linux swap | ext3 | home dir (for linux) | fat32 (for exchanging files between linux and windows) |

i deleted the linux swap, ext3, and home dir. so what i have now is

winodows xp | fat32.

the following screenshot shows what i have. as you can see in the top bit, it only says 19.56 gig, but in the bottom bit, it shows the right number (34.27)

You cannot resize or modify a partition with an operating system on it without formatting it (or using third party software like Norton Partition Magic) Possibly what has happened is you have deleted your Linux partitions, but they have not been formatted as fat32 or NTFS.

You could try booting from a windows 98 boot disk, and loading fdisk and following the prompts to see if there is any non-partitioned or non-windows partitioned areas of the drive. Do not use it to delete or create a partition as it will likely destroy existing partitions. Just use it to view.

boot from floppy, and type "fdisk" at the prompt.

oh yep

i booted my computer with my win98 cd and used fdisk to see the partition information.

it showed the right size for the NTFS partition, but said that the disk usage was 92%.

the FAT32 partition had the correct information showing.

i think what i need to do, is borrow my friends' usb hard drive, copy everything onto there, and reinstall windows.
