Major Windows XP Home Problem!

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I am using someone's elses computer for this. Please can anyone help me? I have a Packard Bell computer with Windows XP Home. Just yesterday, as I was browsing web, computer restarted randomly. Then, when it reached the little Windows XP icon just before the accounts are loaded on the welcome screen, it stalls and does nothing and after alittle while makes beepy noises when you press a key on the keyboard. I have pressed f2 , gone to bios setup, changed some of that , doesn't work....More importantly, i pressed f8 to go to the 'boot' setup. i have booted safe mode, safe mode with networking, safe mode with command prompt, enable vga mode, enable boot logging, last know good configuration, directory services restore, etc...all the options available....nothing....always crashes on the windows logo on the blue screen just before the welcome screen. Sometimes in 800x600 when i do safe mode.....sometime 1280 x 1024 when i boot normally.....PLease help me! Is my computer finished? I have unplugged all wires etc...from back of computer and left out overnight ....Do you think maybe a virus?

How can I fix problem? I have heard I can do a 'Windows Recovery' somehow? How do I do that? Or maybe a System Restore? The thing is I can't because I cant log in to do it! Is there anyway of system restoring when the computer just boots up? Please, can anyone tell me? Otherwise, I will have lost all my work, files etc..... Thanks for any help. :(

Was it behaving properly just before this happened, or did you get spasmodic BSODs appearing ?

It may be a RAM problem ?

One of the sticks may be dead or possibly just needs to be refitted ?

Are you familiar with this process ?

BSODs? What are they? I can tell you that for quite a while I get random restarts of my computer. Maybe spyware virus etc...But always before it has restarted and I can use it again. But now, it just crashes at that windows logo on the start. I can do nothing. Just now, I have tried the Packard Bell floppy recovery disk. It is meant to system restore computer without you being logged on(i.e on startup). It has failed miserably. Doesn not work.

Umm....RAM. Im not familiar with process, no. Please could you explain a bit more? Do I need to open up computer and take out a 'stick' and refit? All I know about RAM is that my computer has 512 mb RAM (except for some reason it actually says 511 MB). Anyway, please could you explain a bit more these processes. Thanks.

BSOD = Blue Screen of Death. Infamous Windows blue screens are generally associated with General Protection Faults. Basically this means your system has had a brain fart and crashed.

You could try, http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/recover...ry_console.html or http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_...llation_xp.html

but this generally will not work with OEM Windows versions.

Nice 9 page illustrated guide as to how you fit/replace sticks of RAM here :) :-

Could be heat related too. Have you cleaned dust bunnies out of there? Try running computer without the side case on. Does it work then?

Could be a dying or inadequate power supply too. Do you have another you could swap out for a test?

Might try resetting CMOS too if you are computer savvy. Take the battery out for a while or reset jumper. Make sure power cord is unplugged too.

:)

If you have the other computer available and it has broadband internet you might try this--use Linux Knoppix as a trouble shooting guide. Knoppix runs from a CD so it would tell you if it is a hardward problem or a Windows problem. If computer runs with Knoppix, you know the problem is Windows. This board has a guide on Knoppix here: http://forums.neoplanet.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=16123
