Downloading ''exe'' files

Recommended Posts

For some impenetrable reason, when I try and download any files that contain ''exe'' files e.g. Anti-virus or Adobe. My Windows XP SP2 refuses to accept it by saying

'' This product requires, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP. Setup will exit. For Windows 9x upgrade, contact Mircosoft''

I'm already on XP!. This has happened everytime (every exe files). Does anybody know a cure for this problem?. :(

Thanks very much

p.s. I'm new to the forum and I'm hoping to enjoy my stay...

Thanks, I'm quite certain that I've got SP2 installed. I've got all the security features (Security centre) etc.. Will re-installing SP2 solve it?. It used to operate fine a while ago, but suspiciously, it decided to give me a hard time. Could my ''exe'' system files be damage?

SORRY. When I read that you were on XP!, I read this as XP1. I did not notice that you also said in another sentcence that this was XP2. I will therefore leave this now to Nellie.

Perhaps a system file checker scan will help.

start > run > sfc /scannow

you may be asked for the Windows CD.

No luck. Same problem came up ''' This product requires, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP. Setup will exit. For Windows 9x upgrade, contact Mircosoft''

Argh!.

Seems your Windows Installer has gone on the blink...

Try this:

1/ Click the Start button

2/ From the Start menu click Run

3/ In the Run dialog box type: cmd and press Return

4/ The Command Prompt window will now appear

5/ In the Command Prompt window type the following pressing Return after each entry:

cd c:\windows\system32\dllcache

attrib -r -s -h

cd c:\windows\system32\

ren msi.dll msi.old

ren msiexec.exe msiexec.old

ren msihnd.dll msihnd.old

exit

6/ After Exiting from the Command Window Reboot your PC

7/ The Windows Installer should now automatically be reinstalled.

**Edited for order of instructions.

c:\windows\system32\dllcache

ren msi.dll msi.old

For some reason, those two commands aren't regonised by my system?. Aw, please excuse my ignorance knowledge. I've exit the setup with the other commands you've mentioned apart from the two above, then I re-booted. Still no luck...

nellie2, yes I did read the ''readme''. It sounds very risking and I downloaded ''clean utilitly''. I'm confused what to do with it. All my programs appear to be asking me if I would like to remove and clean them e.g. my HP printer, photoshop? - isn't that anything to do with exe?

Sorry to be a pain....

Because you have already done these steps? According to the site I found this on, performing all of these actions will "reinstall" Windows Installer. There is no way to "uninstall" it other than this, especially from Windows XP. You could also try,

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=884016 Windows Installer is part of the SP2 update. Perhaps a re-install of SP2 will help your cause. They also link to a download on this page. I believe this is for Win2k and Win2k3 servers, so it will probably not work in your case. Try a SP2 reinstall and see what happens.

Ah well. I give up. I cannot download anything that contain exe files (predominately all downloads are). I need Internet Explorer as I'm using Morzilla at the moment ( I can't even dowloaded IE either). Sounds like one mess up machine to me. I'll think I'll do a complete system reinstall loosing everything. I don't the time to fiddle around with all those silly commands or download that I have lack of understanding about. If I remove SP2, I won't be able to download it back, thus my machine becomes more vulnerable, well it already is.

Big thanks to Scarecrow for helping me and others..

I would never use a reformat as an option with a computer problem, then again I have never not been able to run executable files. This is quite strange... Perhaps try this before you give up...

Start > Control Panel > Folder Options

click "File Types" and see if there is an exe entry. If so delete it. Make a new entry, exe, click advanced. Set the Associated File Type to 'application'

If you can, make a new user. Start > Control userpasswords2 . I have found sometimes a user file can become corrupt.

EDIT: Just tested this. There is no exe entry, but if you make one and delete it, when attempting to run an exe, I got the "open with" dialoug. I made the exe again as I satated above, and all is well.

Unfortunately, my machine is now ''packed up''. As I went into file type, I deleted ''exe'', then when I went to click on it again to re-enter ''exe'' as an application, the entire file type program including my, anti-virus, wireless, internet and safety functions are now securely disabled. I can't control it anymore. Could it be a possibly that its ''hacked'' or got a nasty virus?.

So now, I've got to completely un-install my XP home out of my machine so its dead, then re-install again with a fresh machine. Do you reccommend me any tips about this last scenario solution.

To be honest, its never ran smoothly since I fist bought it.

Hacked? Possible, but why? Unless it was some "script kiddie" running a SubSeven trojan (which should be picked up by ANY Anti Virus), chances are you were not hacked.

I suggest installing a Firewall and Anti-Virus BEFORE connecting to the internet... physically unplug cables if you have to. Immediatley upon connection, download the latest AV definitions, and run Windows Update.

Firewall - Zone Alarm

AV - AVG Free Edition

Windows Updates - Microsoft Update

If you can, download the AV and Firewall on a different computer, and burn to a CD so you can install without the internet.

All of the above three are free for home use. (Windows Update is always free)

Then set a System Restore point incase something happens.
