BSOD! BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER

Hi there,

Yesterday whilst on the internet the computer stopped and displayed a blue screen of death error message, it displayed Bugcode_USB_Driver,

At the bottom the code said:

***STOP: 0X000000FE (0X00000005, 0X812290E0, 0X11063038, 0XFFA98180)

I rebooted my pc and a error report was displayed 'Windows has recovered from a serious error',

I also get on occasion a BSOD message DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

These seem to happen irratically but generally when on the internet.

The Pc is a Pentium4 2.4 with a USB DSL modem. I originally thought it was a virus. Tryed to install norton AV but each time it tried to download the latest update it would crash out. In the end I decided to format the pc and start from scratch. When formating the drive I selected quick format and the problem persisted! Irritated I reformated the drive this time with the slow version thinking that this was the problem. Before the last format and installation of XP Sp2 I disconected the PSU from the MB and took out the battery for 30mins.

Now with a fresh install of XP Sp2 ( the same opperating system the pc has happily been running on since I bought it 2months ago) its still has the same problem but now less frequent.

Any clues?? Please let me know as its driving me up the wall!!!

A search pulled this up, and personally I think it's a RAM problem as well:

his behavior may occur if either of the following conditions exist:

• One or more of the random access memory (RAM) modules that are installed in your computer are faulty, or the memory modules are not compatible with the chip set on your computer mainboard.

• The Page file that is used by the Virtual Memory Manager may be damaged.

If the computer is new (you state you bought it two months ago) you should take it back to your supplier.

Causes of IRQL errors include faulty memory and having too many resources drawing power from the motherboard on startup.

Removing the battery will only clear cmos. It cannot change anything on your drive.

You say you have a USB modem. They require quite a bit of power which may be putting too much draw on your motherboard or PSU as pops said.

For a system such as yours, I would recomend at least 400~450 watts. Memory may also be an issue if it is not inserted correctly, or even other devices not inserted correctly.

If under warrenty, you have nothing to loose by taking it back to where you got it from.
