You must be joking, have you seen rents lately. It's impossible to get anything like our house for under £800 or so per month. How long would the sale money last at that rate?

Part of the problem with soaring house prices is the fact that lenders are prepared to lend far too much. When we bought our house, the law did not allow you to borrow more than the MAN could pay with one quarter of his pay per month. I was earning £18 per week, and our mortgage cost £15 per month. The wife's pay was not allowed to be taken in consideration. I could have, had I wanted to, borrowed a little more, but only to take the loan to the point where I would pay back £18 per month. It may appear to be draconian, BUT it helped to keep prices sensible, and it stopped couples from over stretching their finances and ending up in trouble. It is easy to have to much freedom if you are irresponsible.

I remember it well andsome, tradesmans wage was 20 quid a wek and I had to get a letter from me boss saying I was working overtime on Sat mornings to reach the amount required.

I borrowed 2,250 squid, how ever am i gonna pay all that off :blink: I thought.

With our tax rebate we got a lounge carpet and a settee. :D

I am not too much in favour of unnecessary restrictions, but many people seem to need protecting from themselves. I'm afraid that the culture today is that you have to have everything immediately. When we moved into our first house, we had a second hand dining suite, a utility bedroom suite, and a small portable Dansette radio. We managed without a stair carpet for two years until we had saved some money. Our lounge carpet was a cheap square in the main part of the room, and we stained the surrounding floor boards. I feel positive that we were a damned sight happier without the absolute mountain of debt that many young couples today incur.
