TizMe
I have a very old installation of XP and so it has gone through many windows update processes as well as SP1 and SP2 installs. When I look in the windows folder there are many directories in here with names like:$hf_mig$$MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$$NtServicePackUninstall$$NtUninstallKB823182$etcand then there are also many log files like:KB835732.logKB839643-DirectX9.logetcIs it safe to just delete all these files and folders? Or is there something that I'm not seeing here? :uhm:

andsome
Run Crap Cleaner. It is very popular on this forum. The only thing to remember is that before running it for the first time, visit everywhere where you have to log on, and remember passwords. These of course put cookies onto your computer. Open Crap Cleaner after you have visited these site, and click onto OPTIONS, The on the left click onto COOKIES. Any cookies that you want to keep, drag them from the left pane to the right one. The program will then not delete cookies from that website in future. Run the cleaner then click onto ISSUES. The program will then show what issues need deleting. Click to delete, then select yes to back up these issues, then delete again. I have never needed the back ups, but they are there just in case. I delete them before saving the next backup. I run the program EVERY day, and it really does make the world of difference to the speed of the computer.Crap Cleaner here.
andsome
PS to the above. You could also consider installing RegScrub XP. When you run it, click onto allowing it to find problems itself, rather than user find problems. It automatically does a restore backup. Again this is very popular on this forum, and I have never known anyone have a problem with the program. I always use it AFTER uninstalling a program, and it helps to clear up the dross.RegScrub XP
TizMe
OK. Thanks for the advice. I ran CCleaner and got back 400 Mb.Those old Uninstall folders still bother me though... :D
andsome
If you copy and past each of the folders that you mention, in turn into Google and do a search, there is a lot of information there. The consensus appears to be that you should leave them alone. Did you also run RegScrub XP?
TizMe
Did you also run RegScrub XP?I ran RS after CC. Problems found 0.
TizMe
If you copy and past each of the folders that you mention, in turn into Google and do a search, there is a lot of information there. I just did a google and found this at PCbanter:> I have about 60 NTUninstall folders (something like: $NtUninstallKB823182$).>> Some of these are back to 2003.>> Is there any reason to keep these around?>> Thanks,>> Tom.Those are there in case you want to remove that update/hotfix. I keepthem around for a month or two to make sure things run all right afterthe update. If things are fine then you can delete them. Also you candelete their entries in Add/Remove programs after removing theseuninstall files. Here is an automated tool to delete them at http://www.dougknox.com/ inWin XP Utilities, Remove Hotfix Backup Files v2.1.6--RockMS MVP Windows - Shell/User
nellie2
I would agree, if you are happy that your system is stable then there is no reason why you shouldn't get rid of the hotfix backup files
Boris
Here is an automated tool to delete them at http://www.dougknox.com/ inWin XP Utilities, Remove Hotfix Backup Files v2.1.6If you have installed Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, this utility will not work correctly. It will not cause any problems, but it will not remove all of the Hotfix Backup Folders.
