catgate Posted June 22, 2005 Report Share Posted June 22, 2005 So I closed down all my av ware etc. and installed my new Acronis, after shutting down unnecessary Systray items. I then swept up and dusted down, ran Ad-aware, a squared, Spybot, CC, followed by AVG, scraped all the gobblthripes off the HDDs, CDDs etc and then ran scandisk. A defrag. followed and we were all ready to run Acronis. The first time it ran as far as the opening menu screen and then hung for a short while. I then got the blue screen with a message about an error in module something or other. This screen was whipped away so quickly I could not get out a pencil fast enough and all I saw that meant anything was NT in the file name. I had to hit the reset button to get out of the hung mode. When windows fired up again I got a message that said one of my system files was corrupt, but it had been replaced by a copy from the backup.The second try resulted in my being told that the installation was wrong "the identification code could not be found, Please reinstall Acronis"....ReinstallThe third try let me get as far as the screen which tells me it is "Locking Partition C". This operation carried on until the progress box was about one third full and then it hung again.... Reset. Apart from the usual automatic running of scandisk (which I thought it best to allow) Windows fire up again as normal.The fourth try got a little farther than the third but, when it got the "Locking Partition C" panel full, it just sat there in a most self satisfies arrogant manner, and had it had a tongue I am sure it would have stuck it out. Again I had to resort to the reset button, because again ctrl/alt/del was useless, bringing up the usual weary tale about if you hit ctrl/alt/del again the world will be taken over by Bill Gates.I am a W98SE Luddite and I have had similar silliness when I have tried to run some older Win 3.1 stuff. Has anyone ever used Acronis with W98SE successfully? Is Acronis in 64bit? Will I be older when I grow up? Is there really a Santa Claus? The situation is that now I can get right up to the point where it tells me that it is going to copy my C drive to my CD, but then it looses interest and just sits there. I first thought I was being impatient, but on my last attempt I waited 2 hours before I abandond the stupid thing. (I did not just sit there...I made a cup of tea of course!) Is it a specific make or does UDF convey something about the attributes of the disc. catgate Posted June 25, 2005 Author Report Share Posted June 25, 2005 I have filled a gap in my ignorance by finding out that UDF = Universal Disc Format. Sadly, that has revealed another gap, in that I do not know how to determine which discs are UDF and which are not, since the discs are not marked as such.I have some Datawrite CD-R, some Memorex CD-R and some Datawrite CD-RW, all supposed to be the finest that a man can buy. It suddenly occured to me that I may have to fomat the CD to UDF, so I looked on my 'puter and found that InCD will do that. But, then the thought struck me "Will just any CD drive read UDF discs or does it have to be a CD drive that has UDF ability built into it?" I have both (at present) but what about at some future point in time when I have had the event that necessitates my use of my valuable backup? I probably did not hit the "send" button. In it I explained (or tried to do) that I do not want is the lifeboat to go down with the ship, which I see as a possibility when backing up on HDD, and therefore I want to preserve my system on CD. Basically this means you can add files on the fly. Drag/Drop burning functionality also included.UDF is used for removable media like DVD, CD, compact disc–recordable (CD-R), compact disc–rewritable (CD-RW), write once, read many (WORM), and magneto-optical (MO) discs. Backing up to a different partition on the same drive defeats the purpose of a backup in the event of a drive failure.I would recomend CD/DVD but a second drive is not a bad option either.
