We are now using the Metric system, right?

mm, cm, km, etc

milligram blah

So then why is pint of beer still a pint?

"Can i have 1 Litre of beer please luv"

"Whats that?"

"It's equal to 1.76 pints"

"So a pint it is then"

"Nooo luv! If you round it up i should get a 2 pints of beer, time for 2 pint glasss or just 2 - 1 pint glasses will do for now"

Maybe some of you are too young to remember, but when we went metric there was a big fight to keep the British pint.

Lets hope that we get as big a fight if comrades Brown and Blair try to do away with the £.

Metrication: Since 1st January 2000 all food, whether pre-packed or sold loose and weighed out in front of the customer has to be priced and weighed in metric. Shoppers can still ask for a pound of grapes, or whatever, and the retailer will simply give their metric equivalent (454grams). Price may be displayed in metric and imperial, a dual system, but the law says that they must be in metric.

There's one main exemption - pressure from the UK drinks industry has secured the future of the pint measure indefinitely. It will still be used to measure beer and cider on draught in pubs, and milk in returnable glass bottles i.e. doorstep deliveries. Milk cartons and plastic bottles, and all other pre-packed drinks must be marked in metric.

The above is from the Consumer Education website.
