artist Posted July 25, 2005 Report Share Posted July 25, 2005 We went to see the show on Saturday. I had misgivings about it from the start. I could never stand much of what Sammy Davis Jnr did - even from the man himself. I like quite a lot of the Frank Sinatra songs and must admit to liking a lot of the Dean Martin stuff.All three impersonators had a passing resemblance to the originals and it has to be said that all three had very good voices. But...........I felt like I was watching 'Stars in their eyes'! For me 'Dean Martin' was the best.It really was a very good show but kind of sad - all those years gone - all those people dead. Looking around, most people were in sort of sombre mood too. My daughter and her husband were with us and they thoroughly enjoyed it but then, they don't have the memories......... Why don't they do something fresh and original, I wonder.At the moment, in London, there are shows devoted to Rod Stewart, Queen, Ray Charles and, of course Abba. The last of which is always sold out. And I must confess that when I saw an excerpt from Mamma Mia when I was in the audience of a TV show, I was bowled over with the verve, enthusiasm and talent of the performers.Thos. I was struck by a related thought the other day, whilst listening to some old 30s/40s/50s Trad Jazz recordings. The dexterity and feeling displayed by the musicians as they each weave patterns around the central tune puts to complete shame the modern "four chords on a guitar" (sometimes) pop artists.
