British robot cuts cables snarling Russian sub

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, Russia (AP) — A British remote-controlled vehicle on Sunday cut away the cables that had snarled a Russian mini-submarine and its seven-man crew deep under the Pacific Ocean. Rescuers were preparing for the sub to surface when they discovered a piece of fishing net caught on the nose, a naval spokesman said.

Worried about the seven men trapped aboard the mini-sub, Russians lit candles in Kazansky Cathedral in St. Petersburg on Saturday. 

Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press that the British Super Scorpio had freed the mini-sub from the military antenna that had tangled it some 625 feet below the surface off the Kamchatka Peninsula. But he also said a piece of fishing net had been found at the bow, which would have to be removed before the mini-sub could be raised.

Another naval spokesman, Capt. Alexander Kosolapov, said officials were now in constant contact with the crew "through acoustic signals," and that the crew's health was "satisfactory."
