Start Menu probs

hi guys its been a while since ive been here, these days i have been having 2 problems with xp first of all i am not able to right click in the my programs list when i do so nothing happens, it sort of flashes at me. and secondly windows would not shut down/restart if it has been on for a while it just goes onto the screen saying "saving your settings" and it stalls.

any help would be appreciated :wub:

I found this on another forum.. don't know if it will work but it's worth a try.

right click on the taskbar, chose Properties then Start Menu in the top. Customize, Advanced, then Enable dragging and dropping.

As for the shut down problem.. that could be a few things but I would start with checking the disk for errors.

Go to start > My Computer then right click on your C: Drive and choose Properties. On the Tools tab click the check now button under error checking and then tick the automatically fix errors box. You will get a pop up asking you if you want to do this when you next reboot.. click yes then reboot.

Thank you the start menu thing worked like a charm, as for the shutdown problem i dont know yet weather it worked or not, it takes a while to find out. i will reply back if it worked or didnt.

lol :D i didnt actually read the name my mistake. also the shutdown thing was not fixed by check disk, so if any1 else has any ideas then please do post.

SHUTDOWN HANGS ON “SAVING YOUR SETTINGS”

During shutdown or reboot, Win XP may hang (stop responding) at the “saving your settings” screen. During such a hang, there is no response to Ctrl+Alt+Del; the mouse may or may not work. The problem may be intermittent.

This is a known bug in Windows XP, for which Microsoft has a supported fix. To learn how to get this patch, see MSKB 307274, “Windows XP Stops Responding (Hangs) During Windows Shutdown.” (Link Below) The necessary patch is included in Windows XP Service Pack 1, and also is now available on the Windows Update site under “Recommended Updates” for Win XP Professional, titled “Restarting Windows XP.” However, to find it, you may need to reconfigure how Windows Update appears for you, by enabling the Windows Update Catalog as follows: At the Windows Update page, click Personalize Windows Update at the left, and then Enable the Windows Update Catalog. Save your settings. This adds the Windows Update Catalog link in the left box. Click this link, then click Find updates for Microsoft Windows systems. Pick Windows XP in the drop-down list, click Search, take Recommended Updates, and find the “Restarting Windows XP” patch which references Q307274.

As a workaround, newsgroup correspondent “lou” resolved this problem by dismantling the Windows XP logon Welcome screen. In the Control Panel, click User Accounts, then click “Change the way users log on or off.” Uncheck the box that says “Use the Welcome screen.” This removes the initial logon screen with individual icons for each user and, instead, pops up the classic logon prompt that requires each user to type a user name and password.

thanks for the reply but i also found this article while searching, the thing is that i have already got service pack 1 and 2 and all the updates since but this has not helped.

any more ideas people?

yep tried that no use still the problem occurs, the only difference is that i end up with an uglier screen to stare at in the end.

i'm assuming that there is no solution to this problem, so thanks to all the people who helped. Now i got a new problem, well not really new but i never mentioned it before. everytime i use a program or file which is inside a folder i am not able to modify or delete that folder until i restart. it just keeps on saying that the file is in use. by the way i do close the program after using it.

any ideas, thanks in advance again :)
