XP Home Firewall

I'm having problems with the XP Home Edition firewall.

When I go to the security center, it reports the firewall as on. When I click on the Windows Firewall link and turn the firewall off, the security center still reports it as on.

Is my firewall on or off?

Is this a bug in XP or is my install corrupt?

Is there a way to fix this without the standard "Reinstall" answer?

It may be on for one connection, and off for another. If you have multiple connections (modem, wireless, wired) the firewall can be set differently for each connection.

It's pretty useless what ever. I have been very pleased with Sygate since I packed up using Norton, due to withdrawal of support for a two year old program.

I'm using windows firewall at the moment, though its on XP Pro, I don't think there is a difference between your version and mine.

Try going to control panel/security centre and look to the bottom of the window for "Windows firewall", left click on that and you will see a new window with 3 options and also 3 tabs across the top.

Settings are. On (Recommended)

Don't allow exceptions

Off (not recommended

The tabs are General - Exceptions - Advanced.

Have a look through each one of these, especially exceptions for deciding what is allowed and what is not. Then the advanced tab to check which connections are protected,each one on the latter tab will have its own settings button. Have a check through these and see if you can find what is causing your particular problem.

If you still cant find the answer, or which way to set it up, I will be more than happy to post some screen shots of the way mine is set which gives me good protection within the bounds of the application itself. :)

Passed with flying colours! But I did follow Nels tutorial on how to set up IE6 for security, and it seems to have done the job. Well done, again, Nel. :flowers:

Ah just a thought I have just started using Opera, will check on IE.

Thats interesting, And Opera is not even in the exceptions list.

Tried both test now on IE6 and Firefox. All test passed. As you can see from my screen shot above it says, " This is very uncommon for a windows system"

I think we surprised the test, they didn't know they where dealing with our Nel! :P

Good point dadyassa, There may be many members using Opera unaware of the above, we'll see if Nel can sort it for us. :)
