Google web accelerator.

As this is a Google product I decided to give it a try, having created a Restore point first. The jury is still out, but so far it really does appear to speed up the opening of web pages.

I see that this has already been viewed by some people. I am now going to uninstall it. It really does as it says and speeds up opening web pages, but it takes ages to submit a posting with it switched on. If anyone else cares to try it and report I would be very interested.

Andsome, did you read the small print before you installed it? When using this s/w, personal info that you enter onto web pages can be cached on the Google servers. As a consequence of this, when this s/w was first made available, there were instances of people who were using Google Web Accelerator logging onto forums and being logged in as someone else! This meant they had access to someone else's personal info in the form of their forum profiles.

I assume that as this was a few months ago, the newer versions of this s/w have addressed this issue.

When I was on 14Kbps dial up I tried some so called download accelerators and found them totally useless.

Even though I've not tried this Google thing, I'm very doubtful about it being able to do what it claims but, possibly more important, I find 2Mbps fast enough for me (especially in comparison with my original setup).

I left this thread instead of deleting it so that others could be warned not to install the program. It really did appear to open web pages quicker, but as I said it slowed down postings. I had no problem of being logged on in the wrong name.

A misunderstanding obviously. What I meant to imply was that at NO time was I logged on in anyone else's name.

As most other new Google products, this is still in Beta, so do not expect it to be fully functional.

It works like this:

Google has huge pipelines set up for this type of thing. When a page is requested, Google grabs it an caches a copy. Then, it sends you the cached copy of that page. You're actually downloading from Google's servers as opposed to the sites (a fancy proxy). Oftentimes, this is beneficial as Google's pipes are very fast. Other times though (such as when posting) Google can't cache the page (because of the sessionid/cookie), thus you draw it from the server, but still through the proxy, thus slowing it down.
