Remove Windows XP Setup from 98

Hi, I am new to the forum and have some troubles with my PC (suprise suprise!), basically I have Windows 98 installed and started to upgrade to XP whent the setup crashed and now I am stuck with a choice of operating systems on boot, one is the old 98 (which is what I want as default) and the other is the XP setup program (which is default, and crashes when run!).

Bottom line is I want the windows 98 back and XP off the comp or at least disabled so I go straight in 98 on startup rather than have 10 seconds or so to make the choice which I quite often miss!

Any ideas?

Assuming you have no backup of your system as it was, is there anything on your 98 setup that you require to keep?

If yes, back that up and then fdisk (format) and re-install W98.

It's quite difficult getting corrupt copies of XP out of a machine and there is a good chance it may have messed up your original O/S installation.

You do not need to format. Simply boot from a Windows 98 boot disk, start the computer from it with or without CD-ROM support, and type:

sys C:

(replacing C: with your windows drive)

After this, you will need to modify your boot.ini file and delete the line associated with XP.

See here for more info about editing your boot.ini file. (I recomend you copy and paste your boot.ini and rename it boot.bak before modifying the original.)

Ever since XP arrived, on this and other forums, I would say that probably 90% or more problems reported occur on upgrades. There are a whole lot less problems on new computers with XP, as they were designed with XP in mind. I personally won't be attempting an update to Vista when it arrives, I will wait until I exchange the computer.
