Machine Name

Hello,

I am on a domain and my computer name used to be myname.ourdomain.com, but after I reinstalled it windows set a new name to my computer (looks like bunch of random letters). How can I change it back? Is this something done on my PC or no? If it is not done on my PC how could windows installation give the computer domain name like that? If it is done on my PC how is it done?

You must have an icon named 'My Computer' If I right click mine and select PROPERTIES, there is a tag marked 'Computer name'. I can put what name that I like in there. Have you tried this?

Do as andsome says, right click My Computer > Properties. Click the Computer Name tab, but click the Change button.

This will provice you with your Computer name, and domain name.

The only thing I can change is "Computer Description" (which is blank btw)

"Full computer name" has my computer domain name and then there are two buttons:

To use the Network Identification Wizard to join a domain and create a local user account, click Network ID. and then button called "Network ID".

To rename this computer or join a domain, click Change...OH :D that must be it hehe

Description does not matter. your "Full computer name" is actually just that. The computer name. You are not yet a part of a domain, and as you say, click Change to join one. :)

If you're on a Domain, you'll have to have Domain Administrator rights to change it. You had to have them to join the Domain too though. Are you a Domain Admin on that network?

If so, just right click My Computer, go to Properties, and click on the Computer Name tab. Click Change, not Network ID. You can also see a Domain name listed if you're a member of a Domain.
