DVD X Copy Express

I purchased DVD X Copy Express v.3.0.2 from a well known computer shop, now gone bust along with their parent company, a couple of years ago. It was installed and actvated, and at a later date, upgraded to version 3.2.5.13. It had to be reinstalled after I fitted a new H.D. and activated again, that was twice I had activated it. Since then I have rarely used it, and haven't used it for quite a long time. In fact I very nearly uninstalled it not long ago. Anyhow, having got that out of the way. Last Saturday I did want to use it for a little job. When I selected it up popped a window telling me to activate it again. So I duly bunged in the Licence ID and Password, and promptly got the following message > (7) The alotted number of activations has been used for this licence< and I could not go any further.

For one thing, it has not been activated 7 times, only twice. And anyhow, why should I be restricted to the number of times the programme is activated? Not even Microsoft do that for Windows.

I immediately knocked out an email to 321 Studios about it, which, of course, bounced. By searching Google I found out why, they had shut up shop. 321 StudiosSoftware, who appears to have taken over the programmes, are not interested on the grounds that I didn't it buy from them. I found a site which supposedly helps with problems with this programme, namely http://dvdxcopy.afterdawn.com/, and posted, so I thought, the problem on their forum. There has, so far, been no replies, in fact I can't even find the post now. There was a link to another site which, on entering my email address, said it would email me new activation instructions, that was on Saturday and nothing has been heard of from them either.

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. The way things are at present I've been left with a programme, bought and paid for legit, that is totally useless.

DVDXCopy was declared illegal by the US authorities as it over-rode copy protection on commercial DVDs. The same has happened to all other DVD copying programs.

You can search for DVDShrink on Google to find distributors of that but even their "official" website cannot now offer it.

The afterdawn website is the best one for you to get the info you need plus any guides and alternative programs etc.

afterdawn covers a lot of this type of info aimed at the USA as they are allowed to make 'Personal Backups' of commercial CD's/DVD's under their Fair Use legistation. The Idea is you buy a CD/DVD and make a perosnal backup and use that to play the music / vidio or program so if it gets damaged you do not have to purchase another one.

Quite a good Idea.

How ever in the last few years the entertainments Industry has fought to stop backups being made on the grounds of it leads to Piracy.

Thank you to all who replied. Thanks to baldbear at afterdawn.com who provided a link to go to, the programme is up and running again. I was not aware of illegal uses the programme could be used for, it was given to me as a present after being bought at, as I said previously, a well known computer store. The Computer Shop I think it was called, used to be part of Tiny? What, I wonder, would they be doing flogging an illegal programme? I've certainly learnt a lot about it since Saturday.

Possibly one of those daft legal situations where it is not illegal to sell/own the product but it is illegal to use it - like traffic speed trap detectors, certain ptop radio communications devices, etc. In which case, 321 Studios cut their losses and discontinued it.

I believe that the entertainments Industry (MPAA & RIAA) in the States persuaded congress (by lobbying and lots of cash) to introduce new laws that altered the 'Fair Use' and prohibited copying of Music and Video CD's/DVD's so that the then legal program (DVD X Copy and others) became illegal.
