-pops-
I thought winlogon.exe is either an essential part of Windows (i.e. not installable or removable) or it is a form of the netsky virus. If you installed it yourself, are you certain it is the genuine Windows component?Possibly not much help to you now but I have a very strict rule that before installing ANY software into my machines (including anything from Micro$oft) I make a full backup of my system just in case anything like you are experiencing occurs. Alan2273
Have you tried hitting the F8 or F5 key at starup to access safe mode.
melopll
Yes. I've tried but none of the options is able to log me in. The system reboots itself automatically even if I choose "do not reboot automatically...."This is what I got:STOP: C000021a {FATAL SYSTEM ERROR}THE WINDOWS LOGON SYSTEM PROCESS TERMINATED UNEXPECTEDLY WITH A STATUS OF 0X00000034 (0X00000000 0X00000000).THE SYSTEM HAS BEEN SHUT DOWN.I could consider a reinstallation, but I since I am running Win with other OSs I prefer to fix it.Is there a way to reinstall it without modifying the MBR?Thank you. -pops-
I am convinced that you have some infection on your machine which, by the way things are occurring, will not be easily removed without a re-install.However, wait for some of our overseas members to give an opinion before doing anything drastic. dadyassa
Sounds similar to the old blaster worm, but at least that gave 60 second warning
melopll
I am always ready for a Win reinstall, the difference this time is that I am not going for it if I don't find a way how to avoid MBR automatic Win install!Hope there is a way!!! homecomputeraid
Before the reboots occurred, did you have working and up to date Antivirus running? Were all of your Windows Patches and Security Updates installed? Is it formatted in NTFS or FAT32?Have you tried booting to a write protected Windows 98 Boot floppy, then trying to browse around on the Hard Drive a little to see whether it is seen by the controller, and whether you at least have some functionality? Can you boot into the other OS? This is almost a fresh installation. I was trying to change my Key because I have a Corporate install SP2. I installed this software and than not able to login. The format is FAT32 and no I haven't ry the Win 98 Floppy cause I don't have it.I am able to boot into all others OSs.Is there a way to block Win from wipe MBR?Thanks
-pops-
No Antivirus, no patches, and no Security! No wonder! It is reported elsewhere that a Windows installation without standard protection lasts an average of 18 minutes before becoming infected with multiple examples of malware.Even if your winlogon.exe is not malware (as I suspect it is) there is a very strong likelihood that there are innumerable other things that have installed themselves without your knowing. The easiest thing by far is to start afresh. homecomputeraid
Was the PC behind a corporate firewall? Were all other computers on your network running Antivirus software, and patched with Microsoft updates? If any of those answers were no, you might have a virus on there, or it could just be a windows installation gone bad. How much trouble is it to start clean? Do you install Windows, then the other OS?I'm not sure what you mean about blocking win from wipe MBR. Isn't Repair Master Boot Record an option you must select in the recovery console? You can see this post about how quickly a new, unpatched PC can become infected, and how to prevent that from happening. You can download a bootdisk at BootDisk.com. Since you have FAT32, you should be able to look around on the Hard Drive and see what's on it.
