Locking drive letters

Recommended Posts

Not so much a problem as a general inquiry.

I have 3 removable drives on my computer. H, I & J, if I plug a USB pen drive in and boot the computer it picks it up as drive H and moves all the other removable drives down one letter, is there any way to lock the drive letters so if I leave the pen drive in this does not happen.

OS is XP Home.

I have an IOMEGA Floppy/Card reader, which takes up the A, H & I drive letters, I also have a back up drive which generally takes up J, but this is not switched on all the time.

When I put a pen drive in any of the USB ports and boot up, in my computer it alters the H drive to J and the pen drive takes up H.

If I put the USB pen drive in when windows is running it just assigns the next letter available.

As I said in my first post it is not a problem, I was just curious if the drive letters that were allready assigned could be locked.
