Craig Posted May 24, 2003 Report Share Posted May 24, 2003 To co-inside with the installation of my XP installations on all my PC's at home i wanted to setup a wireless network, however the network i tried earlier this week didnt work well so i have sent it back to dabs.However i have found the following items and have read some good reviews...Wireless Cable Router / Access PointWireless USB AdapterThe router can run at 54mbps, while at the moment i can only find 11mbps USB or PCI cards. So when 54mbps come available i can upgrade.I usually go for PCI cards and not usb for networking, but if i want to use the laptop instead of the desktop computer i can easily take the adapter and plug it in whichever computer i want to use.What do you thinK? mark2 Posted May 25, 2003 Report Share Posted May 25, 2003 Like a fool I was in my local PCW looking for a router, possibly an external HDD too,enquired about going the wireless route, access point+ pmcia card for laptop+ usb adapter for desktop =approx £200 and HDD around £170 would they do a deal :angry: :P walked away :P maplins got my business, HDD going to come via the net, looking for 80gb WD 7200rpm usb2, anyone recall seeing a good price ? Craig Posted June 9, 2003 Author Report Share Posted June 9, 2003 (this post also combines in answers for this topic).I ended up getting:1 x MR814 Wireless Router2 x MA311 PCI CardsI bought all three items from PC World Business Website, PCWB.I must say the service from the business website is excellent, replies to my emails took around 30 - 60 mins, and they dispatch items as and when they are in stock at no extra charge.The best thing about PCWB is the price, the PCI card cost £44.86, while at the standard PC World site it costs £59.99 :o Anyway enough of the price details,Installation is a snip. PCI Cards - The guide says you should install the drivers first, then turn off the computer and install the cards, however on XP you will have no problems installing the card and then the drivers.Router - No software! All you have to do is plug the cable modem cable into the back, add some power and you're half way there!Once your router has power, Windows XP will kick into action and sort the rest out.Some details i had to change manually, but trial and error will get things working.The router configuration utility is accessable via your internet browser. One thing that will need changing is the MAC address it has as default. For some reason it wants to use a PCI card MAC which wont work, so change it to the router MAC!Also if you are using a cable modem (Blueyounder anyway) you will need to access Selfcare and add the MAC address of the router to your account. You will need to do this while you have still got your internet connection via your wired card!Once that is done and you plug the modem into the router, dont forget to turn the modem on and off!So far speed is not a problem as i am only using the internet connection. For some reason i cannot share files and printers over the connection so i will need to look into that. Once it is sorted i will let you know of the speed.At the moment i will give these Netgear products 9/10, very easy to install and no problems so far!
