rtmitchell
For several years through Windows 95, 98, and now with XP I have experienced problems when printing PDF documents. It seems that whenever I print a PDF file, my computer slows to a crawl. Why does this occur? It doesn’t seem to happen when printing large Word documents, etc.I am presently using a Dell Dimension 8200, Pentium 4 (1.9 GHz), 1 Mb RAMMy printer is an HP LaserJet 4200 with 304 Mb RAM.If the larger amount of RAM in the printer doesn’t help print faster, what is it good for??Any reply will be appreciated. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!I have used Adobe Reader - formerly known as Acrobat Reader - since Windows 95, but I have never noticed any slowdowns when printing. So I have a few questionsare you using Adobe Reader, or Adobe Acrobat for printing?what version are you using?do you use a local printer, or a network printer?is the printer very old?are there any newer drivers available for the printer? -pops-
I read, write and print a lot of PDF documents and, like Pat Willener, have never experienced the effects that you have.It seems odd (if I've understood correctly) that you have had this slowdown with three versions of Windows - presumably on at least three different machines. Am I also correct in thinking that your 1Mb RAM in your computer is an error? You could try an alternative reader such as this one which is not nearly as bloated as the Adobe Reader. -pops-
Errr, no.Foxit is useful and small but, for my purposes, it's a bit basic. I was suggesting it as an alternative because of the difficulties that rtmitchell is having with the Adobe product.Having said that, for PDF writing, I do use Adobe alternatives. I would hate to pay the astronomical price for Acrobat.
andsome
Thanks for the reply. I never have any need to write PDF

-pops-
I'm surprised your computer functions at all with that small amount of RAM installed. On the computers I build nowadays I consider 1GB an absolute minimum.

rtmitchell
To quote a very unfortunate golfer (Robert De Vicenzo) after he lost the Masters when signing an incoerrect scorecard: "What a stupid I am!"I meant to type "1 Gb RAM" and not "1 Mb RAM". It's bad enought to do it once, but twice?? I gotta get some sleep.
-pops-
Don't worry, we've all done it.I don't have any answer but perhaps our USA/ Japanese/Antipodean members can help. They'll be around later.Did you try Foxit?
-pops-
Well, at the time of me writing this there have been ninety viewings of the thread and no-one has been able to offer a solution. For my own part, I cannot see how or why this should happen and, if I've understood correctly, happen on multiple machines. The only thing I can think of is that you have another other program interfering in some way with PDF printing but, this notion is so unlikely that I think we can ignore it.Could you try shutting down all other running programs and then printing your PDF file, just as a test?
