Thos Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 As I am coming up to 80 and as travel insurance is expensive and not easy to find after that age, I wondered whether to splash out on a good holiday this year. Several have suggested cruising but I am not too keen on sailing around the Med and places that I have been to on other holidays, so I have been thinking of a fly/cruise to Vancouver or Seattle and on to Alaska.I wondered if any of our widespread circle have any experience or knowledge of these cruises. For example, is there a "best" time to go? Are there shore excursions not to be missed? We are keen on wild life (NOT personal wild life, but whales, grizzlies birds and so on). Any views on a cruise line? dadyassa Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 Not been on a cruise, but lived in Richmond, Vancouver for a while.The West coast of Canada is magic and you would not regret a cruise in that area.Visit Stanley Park, Prospect Point, Cappilano Bridge and canyon about 100 mtrs deep, they have a glass sided viewpoint in the waterfall and you can watch the salmon swimming up the falling water, its incredible, but don't know when they migrate ?I used to work on Vancouver Island and get the ferry which used to go around all the smaller islands on the way, it was beautiful.I always wanted to go up to Alaska, but never got round to it :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Thos Posted January 18, 2006 Author Report Share Posted January 18, 2006 Edbanger & dadyassa.Sorry I haven't been able to acknowledge your responses before because of the "offlineness" but I thank you both for them.I had always wanted to visit Seattle, but had such wonderful reports on the beauties of Vancouver boosted by your thoughts, dadyassa, that my mind is crystalising on a cruise out of there to Alaska probably in June or July. catgate Posted January 18, 2006 Report Share Posted January 18, 2006 I am speaking out of a total lack of personal experience but ... an ex colleague of mine has done one or two cruises up the west coast of Canada and has come home each time raving about them. He is almost beside himself when he gets to describing the close up whale viewing. Good luck with your trip.
