ukbill Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 hi after doing a automatic update for win xp pro my pc will not boot it going through all the normalfunctions but just keeps returnin bac to the windows loadin screen then bac to the start then bac to win loadin screen again i have tried f8 key to run in safe mode but it just carries on doin the same thingall the time is there anythin else i can do or do i need to do a fresh install of windows and maybe format as well hopefully i dont have to format not that clever im afraid with pc's please help thx ukbill Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

r4may Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 Looks like you really need the original CD's or a backup CD as supplied by the PC manufactuer, otherwise how do you know you have a legit copy of XP.However I'm sure some of our experts will be able to help. andsome Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 Try restarting and then start tapping F5, this is the safe mode key on my computer. The update should have put a restore point on the computer before installing the update. If you can boot into safe mode this way, look in Start /programs and look for System Restore, it should be in Accesories, System Tools. Just follow the instructions then. trackrat Posted January 13, 2006 Report Share Posted January 13, 2006 When booting XP and pressing F5 , you will receive a boot-menu with several options one of which will be safe-mode.Select last known good configuration as the first one to try.If that does not work reboot your computer again tapping the F5 key and select Safe mode, when safe mode has loaded click, start / all programs / accesscories / system tools / system restore.Then select Restore my computer to an earlier time and click next. -pops- Posted January 14, 2006 Report Share Posted January 14, 2006 Please don't mis-interpret what I'm writing next but, this is another example of what can happen if you don't have a backup.I'm always going on about this - to the point where people get bored by it and think I'm nagging, I'm sure but, I urge everyone with a computer to make a backup of their system. Even if you think there isn't anything worth backing up, there is and even if not, it will save you the hassle of re-installing your O/S and reloading all of your software and personal files and data.Having said that, I'm surprised that a Windows update would cause this problem which leads me to enquire - are you sure it was a genuine Windows file? I have heard of malware masquerading as Windows updates to trap the unwary into downloading it - with severe consequences which may be what you are experiencing now.My thoughts are to accept that your system is kaput. Re-install your Windows version, update from a genuine Windows source, install all of your software and then make a backup of this using a recognised backup program. I was talking on the phone with a friend this afternoon who has just formatted his system for a new install with some new hardware added. While we were talking he was downloading 85 Mb of updates from Microsoft and the exact same thing happened to him, endless cycle of reboots to the options screen but it would not allow him to choose any of the options.All had been working fine since last night and through several reboots this morning. Fortunately he had ghosted the image at several stages of the install and he only had to boot from an image took this morning. What took him 7 - 8 hours to set up yesterday was restored in less than 10 minutes but now he is downloading the 8 or 9 updates from Microsoft one at a time to see which one is causing the problem. If he can isolate the update number, I will post it here for future reference in case it happens to anyone else.His copy of windows is genuine and he's a respected and knowledgeable member of a forum that most of us also visit, not PCA. :blink: Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

djohn Posted January 14, 2006 Report Share Posted January 14, 2006 Yes, same with me andsome. I have mine set to download and install, did so a couple of days back with no problems. He had already downloaded and installed all the critical updates from the "Express option" on the page, but then went back to look for any other custom updates, found about 10 or so, downloaded a few less than that, but one of them corrupted his system to the stage he could not get windows to load. :( Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

arsenicpants Posted April 1, 2006 Report Share Posted April 1, 2006 i'm a new user here, searching for this exact problemi just reinstalled windows XP MC right after a reformat of my hard drive, followed by doing a windows updatedownloaded all the updates through microsoft, installed them all, and windows wouldn't boot up after a restatrt so i had to do a system restore in safe modetried doing it 2 or 3 times, each time it does exactly the same thingthe only thing i might be able to ad to it is, i wasn't able to restart in safe mode with network connections, just in normal safe modehas anyone figured out what the problem is?i'm chuggered, and pretty dang madi'm no windows expert by far, i just want to be able to run my computer as best as possiblebefore my reformat i had all the windows updates installed, never had any problem with any of them Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
