Software Installation Prevention

Recommended Posts

Hi There

I need to prevent one of the users of my computer from installing ANY software. By changing his account type to limited, I have managed to restrict a few things but not software installation. This user downloads and installs junk on my computer which slow it down to a point where I have to clean install windows. Can someone please tel me how to setup a user account which will automatically prevent him from installing any software ? I am on a LAN with no domain controller so there is no active directory running.

Please help ?

Thanking you all in advance.

Which operating system?

With Windows XP there are three levels of account each with different privileges. A "guest" account restricts the permissions to being able to save documents and to use the programs already installed.

I think, though, that a little education and training in politeness would be suitable for your errant user. Remind him that it is not his machine and that he must not do things to it which you disapprove of. If he fails to take notice of that, prevent him using the computer at all.

When I worked at a Public Library, we used software from, Fortres It does exactly what you want it to, and more...

It worked quite well, and any changes made to the system were reversed using Clean Slate

I realize these are both programs that require purchase, but I have not seen the ability to do what they do with Windows alone (unless they are on a domain).
