glowpowered Posted February 10, 2006 Report Share Posted February 10, 2006 I have an old 98 system w/ 700mhz processor and 128meg ram. i recently put Xp Pro on it and have striped it down to the essentials and it is still very slow. i have a w2k installation cd that i'd like to install. for some reason my bios isn't seeing the disk (yes, the cd drive is first in boot list and yes, the drive is bootable). when i try to install the disk in xp it won't let me do it. is there anyway of getting around this? thanks in advance Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Are you planning a complete fresh install?Anyway, I don't know why your BIOS is not booting your Win2K CD-ROM; can you see the contents when you are in Windows? -pops- Posted February 10, 2006 Report Share Posted February 10, 2006 A system such as you describe would be very unlikely to support USB from the BIOS so a thumb drive would be useless as a boot drive.The speed of the processor and the amount of memory will make both W2K and XP very sluggish and I think you are wasting your time in trying to get a viable machine with that setup.I have found that upgrading an ancient computer to accept a modern operating system always leads to disappointment - if you can get the thing to upgrade at all. If I were you I would revert to W98. At least then you have a reasonable machine and not something that is trying to be what it isn't.
