PWM

Recommended Posts

I came home this morning from work and switched on the computer and got 1 long beep and 4 short beeps and the computer shut down, I got the manual out and no mention of that beep combination.

So I got on the Abit forum and after much searching I found the digital code from the motherboard ( 8b ) and it said to assert PWM for CPU core voltages.

The recommendation from the Abit forum was to reseat the HSF and it worked .

As I built this computer 12 months ago, it is a mystery why this should happen.

What exactly does Pulse width modulation do?.

I remember it as a method of transmitting information akin to Frequency Modulation in VHF and UHF broadcasting the main difference being the PWM was a mdulated square wave and FM was a modulated sine wave.

How this fits with your problem, I don't know. Have you Goooooooooogled?

I have just checked the voltages and the twelve volt rail is only showing 6.72 V, surely this cannot be right or am I missing something.

If anyone has Everest home on there computer can they check to see what there 12V rail reads, as it has been suggested that my problem might be to do with the PSU.

It can be found by clicking Computer & Sensor.

I have disregarded the Everest home voltage reading, as I went into the Abit monitoring system and it showed the 12V rail holding steady at 11.98V and I checked with a meter and got the same result.

What I have found is if I switch the TFT moniter on and it goes into standby (or power saving mode ) the fault occurs, if I switch the screen off and then switch the computer on it boots normally, as soon as it starts to boot I then switch the screen on and no problems.

Has anybody got any thoughts on this?

Ignore the post above about TFT screen, I still have the same problem.

It is driving me mad.

The PSU is showing 12.01v in the BIOS monitoring and shows 12.2v when I tested it with a meter.

If it is warm it generally boots OK, but leave it for a few hours and the problem ( 8.6 assert PWM for CPU core voltages ) is back again, also sometimes when you press the power on button it goes off straight away and the power on button is disabled for about 2 minutes.
