trackrat Posted February 17, 2006 Report Share Posted February 17, 2006 Pops I am having a load of trouble with my computer, http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?s...533;entry181569What I would like to know is if I change the motherboard will Acronis true image restore everything back to how it was or will a new motherboard cause a problem.I have managed to get it working and done a full backup, but I am worried if I change the make of motherboard I will have problems doing a restore and also I could have problems with XP Home as it is an OEM.Your thoughts on this would be much appreciated.Regards Al. Strictly speaking it should be for the machine it was first bought for, but it will quite happily activate on-line when used on a new machine as long as it is removed from the current one first.Microsoft are usually quite lenient on things like this. Regarding your back up, I'm not sure on that one but have a feeling that because of the new motherboard it will not be quite so straight forward but I'm reasonably sure you will be able to save and manually reinstate most of your programs/applications and saved data from the back up. -pops- Posted February 17, 2006 Report Share Posted February 17, 2006 Hello, I'm here :) As has been said, you should be able to do a new install of Windows without any problem BUT you will might well be unable to restore from a backup if you are using a different motherboard..What you will have, though, amongst your backup files are all the files and settings of your old system. So, if your new setup is substantially the same as your old one you will be able to restore all of your personal data and also the settings of programs that you had before. It will be quite tedious to do, however.One thing that may help is if you use the Windows Files & Settings Transfer Wizard (see details in Windows Help and Support) to move all of your personal data to a new motherboard machine. Craig Posted February 18, 2006 Report Share Posted February 18, 2006 I'm a user of Acronis too!All the advice given is sound, and it will take a bit of your own time to rectify the problem, but at least you have the backups :) Using Acronis to restore the backup will work, but Windows will want to install all the new drivers for your mobo, and it will want you to activate again, or it will lock you out.Microsoft dont recommend you to do this for one reason or another, but it is worth a try, and if the system is unstable, backup all your critical data to CD/DVD/External HDD and do a fresh install.As already pointed out, the OEM edition wont have any problems being activated using the new mobo.Craig Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
trackrat Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Share Posted February 18, 2006 After going through everything that the Abit technical support have told me to do I have pinned it down to the motherboard, so I have purchased an Asus board with SLi so if I feel like it I can add another graphics card later.So now the fun begins.One thing I have not had to do before is copy all my e-mails, so can anyone give me some pointers on this, is there a way to back them up or copy them all in one go?. I am using the FSTW now and backing it up to the a USB2 hard drive.The fun will begin tomorrow.As far as the Acronis back up is concerned, could you give me some instructions on how to select and install individual files.Thanks to everyone for there help.
