Kevin Posted February 20, 2006 Report Share Posted February 20, 2006 I don't know if anyone will be able to help me with this one, but it's worth a shot. I once had a Tech Support operator tell me this, and i did it at the time, and it worked great, but i didn't write it down. There is a command to type in the "Run" dialog box, that scans your registry for any missing/corrupt sectors, and repairs them automatically if their corrupt. I don't remember what the command was, although anything will help. My problem is with a friends computer, who let a little kid on it (bad idea) and we have no idea what he did, but when we turn the computer on, it loads the first screen (It says "HP Invent" and it wouldn't load any further. I took the hard drive out, and plugged it back in, and it actually loaded up, but then it froze on the welcome screen, and we had to turn it back off manually, and then it wouldn't load past the first screen again. I tried hitting the "F" keys to try to enter safe mode or enter bios. I don't know what the little kid did that would make it do this. He called earlier, and he managed to get it back working using a startup disc, but we still need to figure out what the heck happend. I need to know of any scan the XP pro has, that will detect this error. I know there has to be something already loaded on the computer that will scan for problems besides anti-virus or anti-spyware. I know this must sound pretty confusing, but it's sure hard to explain. Basically, what i need to know, is what to type in the "Run" dialog box, that will find any errors. I tried to find something in the System tools that might look for system errors, but i couldn't find anything. When the computer finally booted up, there were no error screens, except the common microsoft error report, that said "System has just recovered from a serious error" and it asks whether to send the report to Microsoft. He does not have internet, so of course we clicked don't send. What sollutions do i have? Is there a program on the computer that will find errors and i'm just not finding it? Does anyone know the prompt to type in, that scans for errors?Another thing that might help, is if anyone knows about a program that is FREE to dowload AND USE that scans the registry and/or computer for errors? I've tried doing a google search, but most of them offer a free scan, and then you have to buy the program to fix the problem. The computer is running Microsoft windows XP pro, with a small 128mb memory, and a 60gb hard drive. Memory will be upgraded shortly, but i still need to know what kind of scan to run. Please help me. Another one you should look into is CCleaner.I like Crap Cleaner too, but it does have a snag. You need to visit all sites where you have to login with pass words, because Crap Cleaner will remove all the cookies and you will have to log on at every visit. The way round this for newcomers is to visit all these sites once, then open Crap Cleaner and click on OPTIONS/COOKIES. Then drag all the cookies that you DON'T want deleted from the left panel to the right panel. Crap Cleaner will remember these and NOT delete them in future.
