Cable length

100 Meters max. for 10 and 100baseT (Cat 5 or better Ethernet) cabling.

Good good... I should be fine then. Cheers. :)

Remembering that cheap cable with bad or non existent shielding could also suffer from interference as well as signal attenuation.

Good point, I will consider that when I purchase any cable.

Thanks! :)

Cat 5, 5e, or 6 is generally Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) cable, so the 'shielding' comes from the twists in the wire, not from physical shielding, but it's still susceptible to crush damage and short circuiting if the thin insulation between cable pairs becomes damaged. Of course, it's best to run it at least a few feet away from potential sources of interference like electric motors, power cables, light fixtures, etc. if possible. Make sure you get plenum grade cable if you're going in plenum areas, or if your building code requires it if you're running cable through a building. Plenum areas are places where air circulates, like the space between a suspended ceiling and the actual roof.

You're getting a lot of information from your simple question! :)

No plenum areas... just up a couple of walls and door frames from the router to my bedroom. ;)

For soon I shall have my own computer! :D
