doug
I've been posting several items relating to my startup problems, which may soft- or hardware. On a recommendation I deleted a-squared last night as I already had another scanner running and this morning had a successful boot. So what I want to do is to get a listing of the sequences occurring on Boot. I'm a bit lost looking at event viewer. I see several errors which seem to relate to the crashes but are they because my system froze and I switched off to re-boot and the error relates to the switch off? If you get my meaning. I've tried booting with bootlog in operation but can't find any reports. So any suggestions please.
-pops-
Startup Inspector is an excellent program for showing you what you have in your startup sequence, what is required and what you can eliminate.Have a look here

doug
Yes I've already got it but haven't done much nitty gritty work with it. I have de-activated several items and in hindsight without any problem. I say in hindsight because since deleting a-squared last night I have now had 2 clean startups in succession - whoopee. It looks as though my problem may have been down to software after all - early days yet, will try re-starts next. I still come back to part of the question in that in what order do things happen? Is it possible to produce a list or file that I can use to crawl through if the problem re-occurs? For example once the windows splash screen has completed does this mean that Windows has fully loaded and that clicking on a user Icon then results in applications running?AND NOW a successful re-start. I could be on a roll here folks!
-pops-
When the splash screen has finished and the welcome screen appears, Windows has loaded but applications haven't unless you have applications programmed to load at startup (like it seems you had with a-squared). It is only when the welcomes screen closes that normal programs load up and whether they load or not depends on whether they are essential to the running of the machine and whether you've told them they can. Many programs will want to load at startup but most are not necessary and just put a great strain on the system - possibly resulting in what you've been getting, doug. MS Office is notorious for loading at startup but there's no reason for it to do so, you start it yourself when you need it and it's the same with lots of other programs.Startup Inspector will tell you whether a program is needed at startup. All the others you can cross off the list and have a much smoother booting.

andsome
Office on that I have selected NOT to start up. A double click on any of the Ofice programs opens them within seconds. Also selected not to start are Acronis, Sun Java update, Ofoto now, One click answers, NV Media centre, and many others.
