Recording albums from turntable to computer

Recommended Posts

Most computer sound cards are only able to accept a 1V p to p signal which means that the few millivolts output from an electromagnetic record pickup is too low. Also the signal should have various frequency corrections made in order to sound right - these are normally done in a pre-amplifier which, in turn gives the 1V output.

That is interesting. I was thinking earlier today about trying to save to CD some old pre-war dixieland jazz/swing 78s, and I was wondering about pre amping. The other thing that I wondered was if I could save to disc and then do a "clean up" with one of the legion of audio utilities and if so what file format would be used?

I'd do the initial save as a WAV file - this is often the default anyway. These are big but they are relatively easy to manipulate and are convertible into other (less flexible) formats later.

There are lots of cleanup programs available: some good, some not so good; some free, some paid for. I've not found one that I like particularly and all have quirks and their own characteristics.

It's some time since I used any of the cleaners so I'm out of touch with what's available now so, either have a go with a selection or perhaps someone else have a favourite.

Thanks for that pops. I have just found the need for a new drive belt on my old Hifi player, so I shall have to fix that first. I have just had a similar problem with a twin tape player. All that technology dependant on a rubber band. We should have stuck to steam!
