screensaver shortcut

Recommended Posts

simple: i want to walk away from my computer and have my screensaver pop up right away (with password protection)

i do this but i set it at a few minutes so it doesn't come up while i'm idly staring at the screen or thinking or chatting with someone on the phone.

so is there a hotkey i can use to switch it on?

if not, which executable starts the screensaver, so i can map it to a keyboard shortcut.. and will this still use the same settings i specified in properties->screensaver. if not, do i need to specify command line arguments?

thanks.

- - -or you could try this.

Then:

In order to create a keyboard shortcut, right-click the screen saver icon on your desktop, select Properties and click the Shortcut tab. Place your cursor in the Shortcut key text box and type the letter that you would like associated with this shortcut. Windows will automatically place a [Ctrl] + [Alt] in front of the letter.

Finally, select the Apply button and then the OK button. You may now immediately activate your screen saver at any time by using the keyboard shortcut or by double clicking on the shortcut on your desktop.

how do i make it password protected? it loads a screensaver fine but it's not password protected like i have the options set in properties.

as i asked before: do i need to pass command line arguments to get those things working?

To protect your files by using a screen saver password

Open Display in Control Panel.

On the Screen Saver tab under Screen saver, click a screen saver.

Select the On resume, password protect check box.

If Fast User Switching is turned on, select the On resume, display Welcome screen check box.

Notes

To open Display, click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Display.

Selecting the On Resume, password protect check box will lock your computer when the screen saver is activated. When you begin working again you will be prompted to type your password to unlock it.

Your screen saver password is the same as your logon password. If you do not use a password to log on, you cannot set a screen saver password.

i can only ask that you read the entire thread before posting a suggestion.

I can only second that. Good manners cost absolutely nothing.

Not to worry - the rudeness must go with the laziness of this person.

The information I used in my responses to this thread was very quickly obtained from either Google in the first and the inbuilt Windows search function for the second. Both of these sources are freely available to anyone and everyone who cares to look.

sorry i meant no offense. i simply thought it would be apparent to pops that i had already set my password in the properties -> screensaver "on resume password protect" before i started this thread

i'm looking for a way to map my screensaver to a hotkey (several methods for which have been suggested so far) but also have it do the "on resume password protect" thing.

i found the file that runs my screensaver and put it in a shortcut and mapped it to a hotkey.. ok all set.. but it doesn't retain any of the settings.. (such as password protect.. or some details like.. the specific settings for that screensaver) and it made me suspect those are passed as command line arguments.

if pops or anyone has any suggestions in this area i'd appreciate it greatly. again, i meant no offense and completely agree with your viewpoint that the rudeness is in proportion to the laziness.
