Outlook Express Address Book

Recommended Posts

My Grandad uses Outlook Express and recently he has been unable to open his emails or address book. When he tries to open an email from his inbox he receives this message 'There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred' He cannot open any emails new or old. Also when he tries to open the address book he receives this message 'Unable to open the Address book. The address book may not be installed properly.' He can receive emails and read them with the preview pain but he cannot open or send emails.

I have uninstalled OE and re-installed, I have checked the WAB file is not set to read only. Everything looks normal.

He is running XP home and OE 5.5

Can anyone help. :(

Here is how i've solved the problem. (On Windows XP)

1. Hopefully you have your address book backed up...

2. Close OE and MS Messenger.

3. Open Task Manager and close every instances of "msimn.exe" and "msmsgs.exe" in Services if they still run.

4. Uninstall Outlook Express and Windows Messenger with Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs-> Add/Remove Windows Components. Dont.t worry, you won't loose nothing.

5. Install again OE and Windows Messenger with Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs-> Add/Remove Windows Components.

6. Open Regedit and find "HCCU\Software\Microsoft\WAB\WAB4" If you have a DWORD key "UseOutlook" put it on "0". Otherwise, create it with the value of "0".

6. Find you Address Book, some files with extension .wab and .wab~ and move them to another place.

7. Open OE and close it to create a new Address Book.

8. Restore your Contacts with your backup program (if you have one, otherwise you must add those contacts by hand.)

9. Now, if you open OE, you should be able to open your messages.

10. Good Luck!

For this concern advise try-outlook express undelete,as far as i know tool is free,it keeps all messages in several files with dbx extension, so, you will be unable to get an important document, without opening your mailbox, if it will be needed, compatible with Windows NT, Windows 2003, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows XP, Windows XP SP2 and Windows Vista, keeps your email in dbx files, by doing so, user mailboxes are splitted into several files: Inbox.dbx, Outbox.dbx, Sent Items.dbx and Deleted Items.dbx, that coincide with Inbox, Outbox, Sent Items and Deleted Items folders, can also select several files with eml extension and drag them into Outlook Express for undelete Outlook Express email.

This software is NOT free
