Mac vs. Windows....MAC Posted May 19, 2006 Report Share Posted May 19, 2006 We just bought a new USB hard drive to backup files on our home computer, but we would like to connect it to the network (either wireless or ethernet) to use with our other computers. Any fluctuation in the data transfer will ruin the writing to disk and thus the backup. Reliable as you may think wireless connections may be, a hard wired setup is really the only reliable way to go in important data transfer.Regarding using an Ethernet connection, why? You have the USB facility already there. Introducing Ethernet (and the necessary conversion to USB) is an unnecessary complication - you are making a complex job out of a simple one. -pops- Posted May 19, 2006 Report Share Posted May 19, 2006 I'm still of the opinion that you would introduce unnecessary complexity into your setup.I have three machines linked by a wireless network but for my monthly backups to an external hard drive (with three partitions) I plug in via USB into each machine as required. I make a full system backup of my main machine once a week to a dedicated internal drive.With Ethernet connections, I cannot see any advantage at all. You would still need to separately plug each machine into the drive to carry out the backup so, why not just use the facility already there i.e. USB.
