Copying text into excel

Recommended Posts

I have data that I recieve on the web and I log it into an excel sheet. When I copy and paste the text into excel it obviously keeps the formatting (font/size etc) of the text. To circumvent this I usually open notepad and copy from webpage to notepad then to excel which takes out the formatting from the text. Is there a way for me to copy the text without the formatting? Maybe a different hotkey to copy or a setting in excel? I have looked all over excel but haven't come up with anything.

Hello, and welcome to the Windows Forum!

I know how annoying it is to remove formatting from copied text. I also use Notepad to do that usually, but I sometimes wonder if there isn't a better way to do that. Maybe someone should write a little function to clear formatting from the clipboard.

However, until this is done, you say your original text originates from the web. Firefox has a function 'copy as plain text' - maybe this will resolve your problem? (Not sure if this is an original Firefox function or a plugin; I will try to find out).

Copy as Plain Text in Firefox is an add-on that can be installed from https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/134/.

Regarding conversion of clipboard content to plain text, it appears there are already quite a number of such tools available - see http://www.google.com/search?q=convert+cli...d+to+plain+text

[Added] Looked at a few of the clipboard converters from the search results above. PureText 2.0 seems to be the ideal; it's free, and it works like a charm! I have downloaded it (it's 28KB!); there is no install - you just click once on it, then you can configure it from the systray (e.g. start automatically when Windows starts).

Great tool -- thank you for asking the question! :flowers:

Hello kiddax, after I've copied (Ctrl+C) text to the clipboard I Edit>Paste Special (not simply paste) the unformatted text into excel.

It works with Word too. Who needs converters, for once it's built into Windows :)

I tried to add a screenie to show you the dialog box, but I cannot :(

Thanks for the quick replies!

Unfortunately this is for a work function so I cannot install Firefox on the computer. Also, I see what your saying with paste special, which is actually great, but it'd be slower for me cutting and pasting that way. Now, if there was a paste special hotkey like a ctrl-v I would be in heaven.

So till then looks like I'll have to keep at it.

Thanks again and I hope to become a regular here - I didnt know there was a community like this out there without all the flames...I love it..

Glad you like it here. We regularly patrol for flames and they are quickly extinguished whenever found - not that that happens very often.

Have a good look around - it's not all Windows related and there are some interesting discussion going on most of the time.

I know exactly what you mean  - I find it tiresome too.

So I customised my toolbar and put a Paste Special icon on the excel toolbar.

Click, done..!! :)
