andsome
The only way to get a clean lean machine again, with a sensible number of files on it, is to do a FULL format and reinstall. You can save any programs and files first to C.D's. This is the only way to get back to where your computer started from in the first instance. You also mention 'Go Back'. If by this you mean Norton Go Back, then you are asking for possible trouble. Many of us on here have tried this program and it has caused more trouble than it is worth, and should in any case NEVER be used with System Restore running at the same time.Do your FULL format and reinstall Windows XP, and also install your drivers, then install your Anti Virus and Firewall before going on line and installing Windows updates. Then start to put back your favourite programs and files etc. If you install a third party firewall, you must first close down the Windows firewall to avoid conflicts. I think it's cool. What doed it not good? I want to install, but from now... I... I have 2 HDD, one for the Windows and one for the file storage. So, now am I need to write all the files into DVD's from my file storage HDD? Or it's not affect the new Windows? (the million of files)The Windows' HDD is just for the Windows, it only has the Windows and its programs... so I format just that?
andsome
If you have a second independent hard drive with your files and other programs on this should not be affected by a full format and reinstall of Windows. Let someone else confirm this first. As regards Norton Go back, it is a large program and the faults are too many and varied to list. Those of us who have used it in the past have all got rid of it for various reasons. Just to be on the safe side all the programs that you have on your second hard drive should be on CD or DVD as a precaution in any case. All my photographs are in a folder on my C drive but are also backed up on my D drive. To be safe they are also all on CD.
-pops-
I agree about Norton GoBack. It is a large, inefficient program using a lot of resources and a lot of computer time. It spends much time updating itself and, on a machine with a lot of files (as yours is) it can slow down performance. This may account for some of the problems you are getting.I would agree with the suggestions from andsome. Forget about GoBack and install a good backup instead. There is a lot of information about backups on this forum.
SkH
Thanks all help. So I reinstall my Windows XP. :) I just want to see the Norton GoBack, so if I install it to my new Windows, and then I uninstall then (I use it a week, or a year), then my Windows is as fast I installed it, or GoBack will damage my Windows performance? And what backup topics? How to backup things, or what?

andsome
Norton Go Back can be VERY difficult to uninstall. I would suggest that you DON'T even consider trying it for a year or for any time at all. It is your choice of course, but if it gives you the same problems as it has others, then you may well be sorry. If you reinstall Windows, select Setup when the CD is running and asks what you want to do.

To just instert the disk in the Windows XP, and I select the New Install? That's better or the DOS is better? So what better? And pelase write things to what I look for in the installation... (what bad what good, how to install I the Windows completely perfect!)Thanks all!
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
If you have a bootable Windows XP CD, then this is the fastest way to install XP.While booting, go into BIOS setup, and make sure that CD-ROM is before the C: drive. Then insert the Windows disk and reboot. This should start the installation.P.S. There's all kinds of stuff left behind in your systems registry, Plus it causes start-up and shutdown problems , Empty reg keys and values, garbage. I would suggest that you DON'T even consider trying it for a year or for any time at all.Yea, And if you keep on uninstalling and reinstalling it soon symantec will cut you off thinking your installing it on more than one computer.. It has to be web activated..And their antivirus isn't all that good either , When i had it installed it wasn't even removing all the possible viral infections on my computer..
